The beach is also home to the welcoming Sea Shanty café with a small shop for essentials.  Opposite the property is the Masons Arms, a well-regarded pub serving excellent food and local beers – need to book early!  The village of Branscombe is found on the South coast of Devon and is one of the most relaxing and picturesque villages on the Jurassic Coastline. There is a timeless magic about this village and you will find pretty rows of thatched cottages and it is believed to be the longest village in the country where the streets sweep down through the stunning valley to the sea. The beach at Branscombe is part of the famous UNESCO Jurassic Coast, and stretches over a mile with beautiful views of the Jurassic cliffs on either side of the valley, and from here you can explore East via the coast path to the fishing village of Beer or west to Sidmouth, or the Donkey Sanctuary with its excellent cafe.

The village has a number of historic buildings, the Old Bakery and Forge, both National Trust properties. Inside the Old Bakery you will find yourself surrounded by history, while the thatched forge is thought to be the oldest working of its kind in England.  Branscombe has walks that cater for all abilities, immediately from the front door with beautiful historical strolls or cliff-top hikes and views out to sea.

New Bathroom recently fitted with shower over flat-bottomed bath, WC, wash basin, heated towel rail, back-lit heated mirror and shaver point.

Although there is no outside space, directly across the road is the Masons Arms with its sunny terrace for coffees, drinks, lunch and dinner. And with the beach just 10 mins walk away via a footpath through idyllic countryside, it is not something the owners or previous guests have missed.

For those bringing bicycles, these can be locked up round the back of the cottage (THC takes no responsibility).

Beach days, coastal walks, fossil foraging, country rambles, cosy pubs and picture-perfect cottages at every corner - holidays in Branscombe are truly unforgettable. Considered one of the most beautiful locations on Britain’s south coast, Branscombe is a picturesque village set on the shores of the Jurassic Coast in East Devon, sandwiched between Seaton and Sidmouth. Tucked into a verdant valley which winds down to the sea, there’s a timeless magic about Branscombe, where old stone cottages, thick thatched roofs and colourful rose-glad cottage gardens line the narrow Devon lanes and photo opportunities lie behind every corner.

Holidays in Branscombe are relaxing and restorative, yet there’s plenty to keep you entertained. Step back in time and visit the National Trust’s Manor Mill and Old Forge - believed to be the oldest working thatched forge - then indulge in lashings of clotted cream and fresh-from-the-oven scones with a Devon cream tea at the Old Bakery cafe. Don walking boots and set off for mesmerising country walks through the undulating hills that encompass the village, or swap country for coast and explore the stunning South West Coast Path which weaves its way along the headlands to Sidmouth to the west, or Beer and Seaton to the east, where you can refuel on fresh crab sandwiches or traditional fish ‘n’ chips. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, no matter where you choose to walk, you’ll be spoiled with views that’ll take your breath away long before you take on any steep hills.

Whether balmy summer or brooding winter, trips to the beach are sure to be a highlight of your stay in Branscombe. Branscombe beach was a long pebble beach until the winter of 2022 when storms rearranged the pebbles, and it is now a beautiful sandy beach flanked by pretty painted beach huts and a beachside cafe, Sea Shanty Cafe, which serves breakfast baps, seafood, sandwiches and scones alongside blue views. From sea swims and beach walks, fossil hunting and fishing, Branscombe beach is a beautiful place to spend time.

After busy days exploring the Jurassic Coast and East Devon countryside, Branscombe’s two village pubs are a welcome sight. The Mason’s Arms is a beautiful dog-friendly pub with a roaring fire, loads of character and really good food - so make sure to book in advance, while the 14th century Fountain Head has plenty of outdoor seating for sunny days, as well as a cosy fire, and serves hearty pub food with local ales and ciders.

For family holidays in Branscombe, you’ll find loads of great attractions nearby, including the Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary with its excellent cafe, Crealy Adventure Park, Seaton Tramway, Seaton Jurassic and Pecorama.

Whether you’re searching for family friendly activities for your annual summer holiday or planning a romantic getaway filled with peaceful walks and country pubs, a holiday in Branscombe ticks all the boxes.

Beautiful location and stunning looking pub. Very nice to sit outside and watch the world go by. However, the meals are very hit and miss depending on who the cook of the day is!

May 2022

Fantastic pub with the nicest staff. Could not fault anything. Spent three evenings out of our weeks holiday eating here and encountered very friendly, dog loving staff who made you feel special. Ella ( I think) our waitress was extremely efficient and provided a seamless service. All the staff were just fab. Loved it all.

September 2021

Lovely peaceful place to sit and enjoy the sun. We only managed drinks because they were booked up for 2 weeks in advance.

September 2021

Friendly staff, beautiful pub, well worth a visit

September 2021

Lovely food and staff. However no meals served to anyone on evening who were not staying at pub. Made to feel very unwelcome when you are told if not resident you cannot have food. A board outside explaining lack of staff means they cannot accommodate passing trade for meals would have saved embarrassment and feeling very unwelcome. People were turning up expecting food only to be turned away when there is nowhere else on a monday in particular in branscome to eat on the evening. Some very irate people which could have been avoided if a board was left outside explaining no meals on evenings so that people could have organised something else if they had known. Lunchtime food very good

July 2021

Really nice pub serving very good food and drinks if a little on the pricey side. As we were classed as local residents we were able to get a table. Many were turned away due to restrictions.

July 2021

Stumbled across this gorgeous pub after spending the day on Branscombe Beach. What a find! My husband had Hake as main course and I chose a chicken starter with portions of new potatoes and stem brocoli with almonds for my main. Both meals were delicious. We were very lucky to be served food as about 15 mins after we got there, which was about 6pm they were only allowing walk ins to have drinks so maybe worth booking as we get further into the summer. Well worth a visit

June 2021

Liked the pub, thought the food was expensive though and as there were not a lot of other places available we would travel to Beer etc.

February 2020

Excellent hostelry with friendly service, good beer and tasty food. definately recommended

Beer Quarry Caves
(Less than a mile)

(5)

Like an underground cathedral, the Beer Stone Caves are awe-inspiring caves with mighty halls of vaulted roofs and pillars.  The likely source of the stone for many of the cathedrals, buildings and monuments you have visited throughout the UK, the vast man-made complex of underground caverns was created by centuries of quarrying, and now you can take a guided tour to find out more about their history.  The entrance leads directly into the Roman section, which now houses a small museum containing pieces of Beer stone carved centuries ago by skilled masons, the tools used by the Quarrymen and copies of ancient documents and photographs.  From there, it’s a journey through the centuries, not to mention the setting for seasonal events as well.

Seaton Labyrinth
(3 miles)

To celebrate Seaton’s 1000th anniversary in 2O05, the Axmouth Spiral Centre constructed a Labyrinth in the cliff field above the West Walk.  A 60ft diameter spiral, the walk, which measures 453 yards from start to centre, connects with the way in which the 95-mile coastline reveals 185 million years of evolution.  It has an eleven-circuit form based on a combination of designs, the labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral in France and the one at Saffron Waldron in Suffolk, and as you wander along the artistic installation, you can enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding scenery as well.

The Buzzard Cycle Route
(3 miles)

Cycling in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a wonderful way to get outside and explore the area.  With miles of National Cycle Network across it, it’s also a comparatively easy way for cyclists to explore safely and really get to see the remarkable landscape that the area has to offer.  With plenty of rural pubs, riverside taverns and tea shops along the routes to sit and enjoy, it’s a great day out for the while family.  The Buzzard Cycle Route in particular (otherwise known as Sustrans regional route number 52) is a firm favourite amongst cyclists in the area, and is an opportunity to explore glorious East Devon on a regional 80-mile circular route around Sidmouth, Seaton, Axminster, Honiton and Woodbury. Some of the route follows the National Cycle Network Route 2 along the south coast of Devon.

Branscombe Beach
(Less than a mile)

(13)

Nestled into a valley that reaches down to the sea, Branscombe Beach is tucked away on the Jurassic Coast, and is linked to a timeless, magical village of the same name. Surrounded by woodland and farmland, the area is peppered with thatched houses, a working forge and a restored windmill. It’s a National Trust location, with a number of charming walks and trails to follow, one of which leads to the Old Bakery tearooms. The beach itself was a long pebble beach until the winter of 2022 when storms rearranged the pebbles and is now a long sandy beach. It has a large car park close by where there are toilets available, as well as a picnic area. The beach is a haven for walking, relaxing and adventurous rock-poolers. If you want to catch your supper it’s a wonderful place to fish for mackerel and pollock, although the Beach Shanty Cafe on Branscombe Beach provides excellent local food.

Clean pebble beach. Good facilities cafe shop and toilets. Nice and quiet when we went in july. Lovely walks nearby

July 2021

One of the few beaches we found that had some sand on it, although it also had lots of stones too of course, and dogs were welcome. The option to sit on a grass area next to the beach was a bonus too. I had a swim in the sea whilst there which was lovely.

June 2021

Lovely area but the only place you could get a coffee etc was the Sea Shanty and it was closed half term week!!!!! As the Sea Shanty and the Old Bakery were closed all week for me it let Branscombe down.

February 2020

We loved walking to beach fro Branscombe. If you follow the signs and walk on the road to the beach its quite hilly so take the footpath from behind the cottages opposite the Masons Arms, its a nice flat walk to the beach, easy to follow.

Beer Beach
(2 miles)

(11)

A small pebble beach in East Devon, Beer Beach is in a picturesque fishing village that hugs the shoreline.  Parking is a little distance away from the beach itself, which is accessed via a sloping road and steps at the east end.  There’s one large car park that’s around five minutes away on foot, and another smaller one in the centre of the town.  As the beach is such an integral part of the town itself, there are cafes and shops close by, simply by dint of its location.  There are toilets above the beach, so it’s got all the makings of a charming day out for the family in the summer, or somewhere to stroll and have a cup of tea if it’s a bit cooler.  There aren’t any organized activities on the beach, so if you’re bringing the kids then keep that in mind.  Dogs are not allowed on the West part of the beach from 1st May to 30th September.

Seaton Beach
(3 miles)

(7)

Seaton Beach is a mile long shingle beach overlooking Lyme Bay in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of East Devon.  The gently sloping pebbles make this an ideal place to take a dip or try your hand at windsurfing, kayaking or stand up paddle boarding with equipment easily hired on site.

An esplanade links Seaton town at one end of the beach and the popular Seaton Beach Café at the other. The South West Coast Path runs alongside the beach and a walk to the nearby picturesque village of Beer is a real treat. Dogs are welcome all year.

April 2024

In our view one of the most picturesque sea sides in Britain. Not too much commercialism. A good walk up Jacobs Ladder, the gardens are great for the horticulturalists. The beach is a mix of shingle and sand. There is plenty of beach to wander up and down, and you can get away from crowded areas which are more to the town.

June 2022

Nice seaside resort, lovely walk along seafront with the dog & very tasty lunch at the Coast cafe bar, very friendly staff & lovely food. We travelled to Seaton on the tram, very pleasant journey & we spent nice afternoon at Seaton.

Sidmouth Beach
(5 miles)

(3)

By the seaside town of the same name, Sidmouth Beach is a long stretch of pebbles that stretches from the River Sid at the east of the town, West to Chit Rocks and Jacobs Ladder Beach and beyond.  From the town you go over a footbridge and a number of steps down to the beach, however there are also access points along the sea front esplanade.  There are a number of car parks close by, most of which are a few minutes’ walk from the beach itself, and it benefits from nearby facilities, cafes, restaurants and shops.  Dogs are not allowed on the beach from 1st May to the 30th September, however there is a small area at the East end of the beach where dogs are allowed all year round.  It’s a delightful spot for swimming sailing and surfing if the weather permits it, but you do have to take your own equipment.

Monmouth Beach, Lyme Regis
(9 miles)

(7)

Named after the Duke of Monmouth who landed here in 1685 in an attempt to take the crown from King James II, Monmouth Beach is a large pebble and sand beach that stretches over a kilometer southwest from the Cobb wall.  There are beach huts, a bowling green, the Lyme Regis Power Boat Club and paid car parks close by.  Meanwhile, for those wishing to have their own exploratory adventures, you can find a layer of limestone called the ammonite graveyard at Monmouth Beach, containing a large number of (you guessed it) ammonites.  There are numerous walks close by and dogs are allowed on the beach all year round.  There is lifeguard cover in the summer, and all the town’s cafés, restaurants and amenities are within easy reach.

October 2021

We had a lovely holiday staying in the little sea house. Perfect location on the beach. Was very warm & cosy inside. Was generally clean on arrival but think it could do a intensive deep clean occasionally to clean racks /hard to reach places ( plug holes) but this did not effect our stay ( I’m just bit OCD with cleaning) I would recommend this to anyone wanting a relaxing tranquil break. Also the out hours staff from toadhall cottages were very helpful. Would book again

Nice 10 min walk to beach. I would imagine parking might be a problem near the cottage in the summer. Really enjoyed our stay.

We are delighted you enjoyed your stay at Terry Holt and found the local pub a brilliant place to enjoy dining. We will let the housekeeping service know about the corkscrew and crumbs.

August 2022

Lovely cottage. Spotlessly clean. Bed/pillows very comfortable. Plenty of information. Close to beach and SW Coast Path. Quiet location. Masons Arms directly opposite but no noise issues. Great food in the Masons Arms. Would highly recommend. Simple booking and process. Thanks to all at Toad Hall. Would highly recommend.

April 2022

We had a lovely stay in Terry Holt, unfortunately the pub opposite was closed for refurbishment and was opening the week after we left. That can’t be helped. I would imagine parking in the high season is a nightmare, not too bad for us as the pub was closed. The NT tea room was also closed, maybe a covid thing. Comfy bed, all the equipment we needed.

Thank you for your feedback. It was unfortunate that the local hostelries and tea room was closed for your visit. Parking has not been difficult for our guests. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay.

October 2020

Good location and everything you need supplied in the cottage

September 2020

Yes it was a lovely quiet and cosy cottage for the 2 of us. The only issue was the parking. It was difficult to find a space particularly for loading and unloading on day of arrival & departure. Beautifully furnished and equipped and easy access to the beach and walks.

September 2020

Lovely, comfortable, attractive cottage, extremely well designed to make the most of the space - so did not feel cramped. Furnishings good quality. Little noise from pub opposite, despite people drinking outside (Covid). Pleasant, flat 10 minute walk through woods to beach - and then good walks both ways along the coastal path.

August 2020

Great house, although not sure “deep clean” was carried out correctly as we did have a few issues, ie food left in cupboard, dirty floor, sand under cushions on settee as discussed during telephone conversation.

Thankyou for the excellent ratings, and the helpful comments. We have now acted upon these

March 2019

Taken from the Guest Book: Terry Holt is a beautiful, well thought out holiday cottage, we had a lovely three days there with our dog. The location is fantastic - a real getaway, minutes away from the beach and the lovely village of Beer. The owners have thought about every little detail to make you feel like you are home. It has great WiFi, excellent TV and all other amenities you would expect. We highly recommend it and are looking forward to returning, and so is the dog! Kim M. Feb 2019

New Property to Market 2019, written by Martin Carter, Property manager for Toad Hall Cottages. I would like to introduce this cosy holiday cottage for couples. Terry Holt has been a very successful holiday property for many years and is newly back on the market having been revamped and refurnished. A romantic holiday home in a fabulous location just 500m from Branscombe beach and café, whilst also only a stone’s throw from the reputable Masons Arms Inn, making for a great holiday spot. This is a fabulous location where you can get away from it all but have some attractions and amenities a short walk away if you wanted a break from driving everywhere or simply wanted to enjoy quality time together with your favourite pet as well. The Jurassic coast is a magnet for adventure and there are no end of interesting places to visit in the locality.

February 2019

We loved our stay in this beautiful, light and airy little cottage. The living space is open plan and and kitchen is well equipped with everything you need. The bedroom is spacious for two. The cottage location is amazing with the pub serving excellent food just across the road. The village of Branscombe is quiet and idyllic. There is plenty to do there with the Branscombe trail and the mill, forge and tea rooms to visit. Branscombe beach is a short walk from the cottage just down the coastal path. There’s a great pub and sea shack there serving ice creams and selling beach essentials.
