Great place for coffee, snacks and cakes. Coffee really nice but I’ve marked it down as no pouring cream!.

November 2023

Honiton was well worth a visit for many reasons including the gallery, the museum, the shops and this café fitted into the local scene just right even though it is part of a wider chain of coffee shops.

Allhallows Museum
(4 miles)

(2)

Honiton is famous for its historic lace industry, and the Allhallows Museum is an homage to some of the highest quality production in the world.  In Honiton’s oldest building, dating back to 1327, it features examples of 16th to early 20th century Honiton lace.  The museum also incudes Honiton pottery, a mid Victorian furnished doll's house; palaeontology; children's toys; war memorabilia, mementos of Allhallows School and the Borough of Honiton; coins and trade tokens.  There are children’s activities when you visit, and lace making tutorials are of course a highlight, helping to keep the craft alive for future generations.  The museum is open from March to October although hours vary so keep an eye on the website.  Admission is free, but it is a charity, so all donations are welcome.

Members in out party visited and said how lovely these gardens were. Unfortunately we ran out of days to visit but definitely on our list for next time.

August 2023

What a wonderful garden! Got there just as it was opening and a lovely welcome from ticket lady. Had opportunity to talk to owner. What a lovely man; he gave us a little history of the gardens before we walked the grounds.. We spent a couple of hours here and it was well worth the time. Not a great deal of flowers and most things are left to "do their thing" so to speak, but that did not detract from our enjoyment. Some lovely views, especially from the "ha-ha" stone.

Honiton Golf Club
(5 miles)

Established in 1896, Honiton Golf Club is a beautiful mature parkland course that’s relatively flat and easy to walk.  That said, it still provides a challenge for ambitious players with 18 holes and lovely views in all directions.  The clubhouse and bar are charming, and there’s an indoor training facility as well as coaching, a golf simulator, putting greens, pro shop, practice grounds and nets.  Green fees start at £18 per day (members' guest fee) in peak season and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.

Loughwood Meeting House
(5 miles)

An atmospheric Baptist meeting house dating back to the 17th century, Loughwood is one of the earliest surviving Baptist churches in the country. Founded in secret during a time of persecution towards non-conformists, this beautiful chapel is set into the hillside overlooking the rolling east Devon countryside with views of the Axe Valley.  When you visit, it’s like stepping back in time.  The interior is virtually unchanged, and the chapel is still used twice a year by the local Kilmington Baptist Church.  It is available for prayer and is essentially still a working church, so there aren’t any facilities, but it is a lovely site at which to take in the calm.  As mentioned, services are held twice a year, but otherwise it’s open throughout the day, so take a peek at the website for up to date information.

A lovely family day out at a very reasonable price. Our Grandchildren loved it! Although we loved all the animals, the only slight disappointment was not being able to see all the cats and dogs without a prior appointment with an intention to adopt.

Seaton Beach
(10 miles)

(7)

Seaton Beach is a mile long shingle beach overlooking Lyme Bay in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of East Devon.  The gently sloping pebbles make this an ideal place to take a dip or try your hand at windsurfing, kayaking or stand up paddle boarding with equipment easily hired on site.

An esplanade links Seaton town at one end of the beach and the popular Seaton Beach Café at the other. The South West Coast Path runs alongside the beach and a walk to the nearby picturesque village of Beer is a real treat. Dogs are welcome all year.

Lovely walk along the seafront and excellent cafe at the end of it. Dog friendly and excellent food.

April 2024

In our view one of the most picturesque sea sides in Britain. Not too much commercialism. A good walk up Jacobs Ladder, the gardens are great for the horticulturalists. The beach is a mix of shingle and sand. There is plenty of beach to wander up and down, and you can get away from crowded areas which are more to the town.

June 2022

Nice seaside resort, lovely walk along seafront with the dog & very tasty lunch at the Coast cafe bar, very friendly staff & lovely food. We travelled to Seaton on the tram, very pleasant journey & we spent nice afternoon at Seaton.

October 2020

July 2018

Nice place for a seaside stroll, we were a bit disappointed that bikes aren't allowed on the paths and that there are dog restrictions. Pebbly beach so no good for sand castles but we had a nice few hours and lunch and ice cream from one of the nearby cafes.

October 2017

Beer Beach
(10 miles)

(11)

A small pebble beach in East Devon, Beer Beach is in a picturesque fishing village that hugs the shoreline.  Parking is a little distance away from the beach itself, which is accessed via a sloping road and steps at the east end.  There’s one large car park that’s around five minutes away on foot, and another smaller one in the centre of the town.  As the beach is such an integral part of the town itself, there are cafes and shops close by, simply by dint of its location.  There are toilets above the beach, so it’s got all the makings of a charming day out for the family in the summer, or somewhere to stroll and have a cup of tea if it’s a bit cooler.  There aren’t any organized activities on the beach, so if you’re bringing the kids then keep that in mind.  Dogs are not allowed on the West part of the beach from 1st May to 30th September.

June 2018

Beer is a very pretty village!, and the beach is an absolute joy

Visited one evening. A beautiful beach. You can walk to Seaton on the coast path, if you feel energetic and don't mind a lot of steps. Well worth it due to the stunning views.

Branscombe Beach
(11 miles)

(13)

Nestled into a valley that reaches down to the sea, Branscombe Beach is tucked away on the Jurassic Coast, and is linked to a timeless, magical village of the same name. Surrounded by woodland and farmland, the area is peppered with thatched houses, a working forge and a restored windmill. It’s a National Trust location, with a number of charming walks and trails to follow, one of which leads to the Old Bakery tearooms. The beach itself was a long pebble beach until the winter of 2022 when storms rearranged the pebbles and is now a long sandy beach. It has a large car park close by where there are toilets available, as well as a picnic area. The beach is a haven for walking, relaxing and adventurous rock-poolers. If you want to catch your supper it’s a wonderful place to fish for mackerel and pollock, although the Beach Shanty Cafe on Branscombe Beach provides excellent local food.

Lovely place for a dog walk along the beach. Such a pity that the sea is eroding the cliffs around here.

October 2023

Beautiful Beach with stunning walks in both directions on coastal path. Sea shanty cafe modernised since our last visit. Lovely cream teas!

July 2023

The beach was within walking distance of where we were staying. Excellent for dogs and the sea shanty sells dog icecream

June 2023

Beach clean and has pebbles rather than a sandy beach. Fabulous food found at the Sea Shanty Cafe with sea view and stunning views of the Jurassic coast line.

August 2022

gorgeous beach - we canoed and swam a lot

September 2021

Lovely beach

September 2021

Clean pebble beach. Good facilities cafe shop and toilets. Nice and quiet when we went in july. Lovely walks nearby

July 2021

One of the few beaches we found that had some sand on it, although it also had lots of stones too of course, and dogs were welcome. The option to sit on a grass area next to the beach was a bonus too. I had a swim in the sea whilst there which was lovely.

June 2021

Lovely area but the only place you could get a coffee etc was the Sea Shanty and it was closed half term week!!!!! As the Sea Shanty and the Old Bakery were closed all week for me it let Branscombe down.

February 2020

We loved walking to beach fro Branscombe. If you follow the signs and walk on the road to the beach its quite hilly so take the footpath from behind the cottages opposite the Masons Arms, its a nice flat walk to the beach, easy to follow.

January 2020

Superb beach and surroundings. Tricky drive to get there but well worth it.

June 2018

A pretty place down narrow lanes - the village is a must for keen photographers too - loved it!

Monmouth Beach, Lyme Regis
(12 miles)

(7)

Named after the Duke of Monmouth who landed here in 1685 in an attempt to take the crown from King James II, Monmouth Beach is a large pebble and sand beach that stretches over a kilometer southwest from the Cobb wall.  There are beach huts, a bowling green, the Lyme Regis Power Boat Club and paid car parks close by.  Meanwhile, for those wishing to have their own exploratory adventures, you can find a layer of limestone called the ammonite graveyard at Monmouth Beach, containing a large number of (you guessed it) ammonites.  There are numerous walks close by and dogs are allowed on the beach all year round.  There is lifeguard cover in the summer, and all the town’s cafés, restaurants and amenities are within easy reach.

October 2023

My dog Luna and I really enjoy walking and playing ball along the beach keeping eyes down to see if we can find a fossil!!! very clean and looked after Love it!!!

June 2022

Stunning, quiet and picture perfect ideal place to relax and paint ?

November 2021

Stayed here in The Little Sea House right on the beach. Amazing sunrises. Beautiful and peaceful but tricky to walk on in places.

October 2021

We had a lovely holiday staying in the little sea house. Perfect location on the beach. Was very warm & cosy inside. Was generally clean on arrival but think it could do a intensive deep clean occasionally to clean racks /hard to reach places ( plug holes) but this did not effect our stay ( I’m just bit OCD with cleaning) I would recommend this to anyone wanting a relaxing tranquil break. Also the out hours staff from toadhall cottages were very helpful. Would book again

Just beautiful

September 2020

Great for fossil hunting and dog friendly!

September 2017

Town Beach, Lyme Regis
(12 miles)

(9)

In the picturesque harbour town of Lyme Regis, Town Beach is covered in pebbles at one end thanks to the coastal protection scheme that placed them there to provide essential care for the Marine Parade and the buildings along it.  At the other end the beach has been built up with sand, no longer gets covered at high tide and provides an extensive beach area manned by RNLI lifeguards in the summer.  There are kiosks, cafes, shops and restaurants bordering the beach, so it’s ideal for visiting with family and spending the whole day on the sand if the weather allows.  The main sandy beach in the area, it’s a delight and easy to get to when on holiday in Dorset.  There is paid parking nearby, so don’t forget your change, and remember that dogs are not permitted from 1st April to 31st October, while from 1st November to 31st March they must be on leads.

Nice clean beach with plenty of clean WCs and cafes. The sandy bit at the harbour is good for dogs to run around (out of season) and kids to dig in.

April 2024

Nice beach but very busy and did not like the swooping seagulls!

August 2023

Wonderful location and so much to do, we didn't use our car once for a week, unheard of!! The parking in the town not good but for a town of that age, it was adequate and the other car parks further out were very good.

May 2022

Booked a beach hut from Town Council! Great fun and provided welcome shade on v hot day! Appreciated the two chairs provided but would have liked a small table for food / coffee

September 2021

Great beach on the sandy side was really busy and made use of the boat hire on the beach which was great fun, seagulls are a real issue when it comes to food and we ate ours in our tent after my daughter lost a sandwich to one right out of her mouth.

August 2021

We loved the seafront and that in October it was full of people. We liked the beach bit, seeing families enjoying the sand, and it was great to see open loos, nice ice-cream and lots of different places to eat and drink.

October 2020

We had a lovely dog walk along the beach, very pleasant.

September 2018

A lovely family friendly beach. Pebbled at one end and sandy at the other. Plenty of eateries and ice cream places. A good place for fossil hunting.

August 2018

Excellent area and beach although extremely busy if the sun makes an appearance. I go to Lyme Regis whilst dogs are allowed on the beach (I do use it with my dog) and would like to see more policing re dogs off leads.

April 2024

We had a fantastic break at Little Leywood Cottage, we were met on arrival with a very warm welcome, lots of information was provided about local walks and dog friendly beaches which we very much appreciated. Our hosts were very helpful and friendly. The kitchen was very well equipped, the living room and out door area offered lots of space to sit and relax. The bedrooms were both lovely and the beds were very comfortable. We enjoyed our stay at this wonderful little gem of a cottage. Many thanks to Mo and Ian.
