The historic old town retains an olde world charm with small streets filled with galleries, boutique shops and famed gastro restaurants and cafés.  Its sheltered south facing beaches are safe for children and water sports enthusiasts alike with great fishing and leisure boat opportunities available from the Cobb harbour.   In the village of Charmouth you will find near the beach Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre a great place for local fossil information, tours and guides.  For those who would like a change of scene and a day away from the beach, the surrounding rolling countryside, which is an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, boasts walking and cycling in abundance or perhaps while away a few days exploring pretty East Devon fishing villages such as Beer and Branscombe or head to the market town of Axminster to sample Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage Canteen.

We came here on an overcast day and spent over 3.5 hours just walking about these fabulous gardens. We took our own picnic with us but there is a cafe which was very busy at lunchtime with seating both inside and out in a large patio area. Really appreciated being able to take our dog in with us - we wouldn't have been able to visit otherwise. Thoroughly recommended. Wish I had had time to book it before we came on holiday as we could have used our Tesco Vouchers. Probably worth booking online in advance too.

July 2021

Beautiful gardens and very informative and detailed tour of the house.

August 2019

Spent a most pleasant couple of hours walking the grounds. Be prepared to traverse steps [up & down] but worth it especially if you like topiary which I am not a great advocate of but I found the topiary at Mapperton most interesting.

Eype Beach
(5 miles)

(2)

A small pebble beach close to the historic market town of Bridport, Eype Beach is a steep shelved beach (Eype means ‘steep place’) with beautiful views of the West Dorset coast.  Dogs are permitted all year round and refreshments are available at Lower Eype.  The beach is part of one of the most beautiful little villages in the area, where buildings can be traced back to the late 18th century.  Consisting of Lower Eype and Higher Eype, it’s the lower part of the village that has access to the beach, which also boasts the magnificent Golden Cap, the highest cliff on the south coast at 191-metres above sea level.  The beach is favoured by swimmers and fishing fans as well as avid fossil hunters, and there is parking nearby for a few cars as well as toilets and a pub.

West Bay Beach, Bridport
(5 miles)

(4)

Under the golden glow of the majestic sandstone cliffs and the Golden Cap, the highest cliff on the south coast, West Bay Beach (made famous by the popular drama series Broadchurch) is in the south of the historic market town of Bridport.  At the western end of Chesil Beach, the area forms part of the Dorset Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site within Lyme Bay and is a wonderful location for family holidays.  Bridport Town is a short bus ride away or a very pleasant 20-minute walk.  The beach itself is shingle, sand and pebbles with steep shelving, a slipway and a harbour.  There’s an auxiliary coastguard and lifeguards at your service, toilets, disabled toilets and a beachside refreshment kiosk.  Nearby activities include kayaking, snorkeling, fishing, sailing, swimming surfing and jet skiing.  There are also car parks close by and while dogs are banned from May to September, they are allowed out of the summer season.

Lovely to stroll along the top of the dune which is compacted, easy to walk on and accessible from either the pier or the road beside the Visitor Centre. Wonderful views.

October 2023

Lovely walk, bit strenuous climbing up Golden Cap, buts it’s worth it ! However there is an easier route too.

September 2018

Lovely place to wonder around. Great relaxing beach to stroll along brilliant view of the cliffs. Easy parking. Fish and chips from the Seasider chippie went there twice in the week. really tasty.

August 2018

we loved West Bay very much did not eat at any of the restuarants there apart from the George Hotel (one night) as Gluten Free options were either poor choices or non existant.

July 2017

East Cliff Beach
(5 miles)

(2)

A fine shingle beach with sand at the water’s edge, East Cliff Beach is a beautiful place to spend the day with the family on summer holidays in Dorset.  There’s lifeguard cover from July to September in the summer holidays on East Beach itself, but that doesn’t really cover East Cliff Beach, so just be careful when and where you swim and stay away from the cliff base to avoid falling stones.  There’s a long stay car park behind East Beach and a smaller short stay car park just before entering the harbour area in front of the Bridport Arms Hotel.  Toilets are located at the main West Bay Road car park and baby changing facilities are provided as well.  Dogs are permitted on the beach all year round, but it is a clean zone that’s regularly patrolled by wardens imposing fines, so don’t forget to clean up after your pets!

We walked from Lyme Regis to Charmouth across this beach at low tide. MUST be low tide. It was a super walk, a bit challenging in places as we had climb over rocks. The dog absolutely loved it.

October 2018

I really enjoyed this side looking at interesting stone formations. The beach 'shelving' has to be looked out for if you are paddling and it is better to wait until very low tide so that you can see where bits rise and fall.

Hive Beach
(6 miles)

(3)

A National Trust beach in Burton Bradstock, Hive Beach is part of an estate that forms one of the main gateways to the Jurassic Coast and the South West Coast Path.  Around it are beautiful cliff top walks, and surrounded by the sandstone cliffs, Hive Beach perfect for visiting families.  Made of shingle, it forms part of the larger Chesil Beach and is on a World Heritage Site that has the largest shingle ridge in the world.  The nearby Burton Cliff is an example of extraordinary geology in the area, which appears to glow bright gold in the sunlight.  Perfect for picnics, the beach has a car park and toilets nearby, linked to the Hove Beach Café which specializes in serving fish.  From 1st June to the end of September there are restrictions for dogs on the beach, but they are welcome on at least part of it all year round.

Charmouth Beach
(7 miles)

(7)

Perfect for family days out, Charmouth Beach is a mix of sand and pebbles, fossils (for which the area is famous), good swimming and good surf.  It is divided into two distinct areas (East and West) by the mouth of the River Char, which often forms a lagoon suitable for boating or watching the ducks swim past.  To get to the beach, simply find the centre of the village and follow Lower Sea Lane.  There are ample car parks close to the beach as well as another one half way down Lower Sea Lane if those are full.  Dogs are allowed on the West beach as long as they are on leads from 1st May and 30th September between the sea defenses and Lyme Regis but not on the area of beach in front of the beach huts and the Heritage Centre. From 1st July to 31st August dogs are not allowed on East Beach between 10:00am and 6:00pm, but are welcome outside these hours.  At East Beach there is a beach café and picnic tables close by, and in the summer months there is a bouncy castle.  There are also lots of beautiful walks close by to enjoy.  West Beach meanwhile is about a mile and a half long and is a haven for fossil hunters and avid rock-poolers.

Walking this beach from Lyme Regis

October 2023

Great beach, Its busy by the shops but plenty of places to walk to find space away from others. The toilets are bad, so with a few wipes and wash you hands after. Get there early for parking. It is sand, shingle and rock pools, so great for a non commercialised beach day. Follow the tide out if you are fossil hunting but best to have a guided tour first from the museum so you know what you are looking for. One of our favourite sea sides in Britain.

June 2022

This is a beautiful area. Gets very busy and there are about four car parks and on street parking. The museum was very fascinating. Toilet queue was horrendous. This is a great area for inflatables as you can go down the stream if you want instead of the sea. There is also a large grass bank to picnic on instead of the beach cobbles.

August 2021

Great beach if but a bit stony where we went, good facilities for food and drinks and no where near as many seagulls as Lyme Regis.

August 2021

Lovely quaint beach.

May 2019

Lovely spot to sit, relax and look for fossils.

September 2023

Rural and secluded location which is hidden away on a beautiful track. Owners are wonderful and dog friendly. Best welcome back we have experienced. Spent first two days walking from the cottage door. Cider farm, local dog friendly pub and a watermill cafe can be done on a circular walk. The farmshop down the road is brilliant or there is Waitrose,Morrisons,Coop and Lidl in Bridport. Beaches are easily reached. Be careful of sat nav as the minor roads are interesting to say the least. Folding wing mirrors and reversing skills were tested.

July 2023

We had a lovely week in a lovely cottage in a great location. Comfortable, well-equipped cottage with a lovely welcome pack and everything we needed for a relaxing week’s holiday.

July 2023

We always enjoy our stay

July 2023

We had an enjoyable stay at Little Kershay. Lovely outdoor space for our dog to run in and out when he pleased. Accommodation was well equipped, lovely comfy bed. Kitchen space a little tight by the cooker but manageable and very useful to have the extra worktop space above the fridge, had everything we needed. Met the lovely owners a couple of times. Good location for local shops and beaches by car. Very quiet and peaceful.

Yes, thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this quiet location. Lovely welcome pack too. The best place for us eating out was The New Inn at stoke abbott. September 2022

Our 4th time here and absolutely love the cottage and location. The owners are so lovely. ????

August 2022

All good. Will come again sometime

July 2022

We had a short stay in this cottage in early July. When we arrived we found milk and butter in the fridge and shortbread biscuits which our hosts had provided. We saw them a couple of times and they seemed to be very nice people. The cottage benefits from the natural light that comes from the Eastern end of the cottage giving it a spacious feel. The bed was comfortable. Finding the location on my satnav using the postcode alone was not very successful but using the address was better. Best was what3words with the parking space at quits.verve.fictional and the entrance to the cottage at happier.fact.generated.We were able to sit in the small secluded garden and watch the chickens whilst sampling wine from the local Furleigh vineyard. We had a very nice stay and would happily come again.

July 2022

A beautiful location, we were delighted to have chickens and a cow and calf as neighbours, cottage was lovely and the garden lovely to chill out in the evening, owners very friendly and helpful, I would love to return in the future

June 2022

June 2022

Beautiful and charming place to stay, well located for everything there is to see. Well equipped and very clean with good quality linen and towels. We loved our stay in this quiet tucked property on the farm. The owners who in the farmhouse are very friendly and helpful. We’d love to go back again.

March 2022

If you are thinking of staying here you will not be disappointed, such a smooth transaction with the booking process, the property exceeded our expectations, it is a perfect location to explore Dorset. The owners were very helpful, the annex had a lovely bedroom with a very comfortable bed and lovely Egyptian cotton sheets, the bathroom was lovely as was the living area and kitchen, we couldn't have asked for a better stay and will definitely be returning again soon, thanks so much for making our stay so perfect.

Thank you for your feedback. We are absolutely delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Little Kershay. We will look forward to welcoming you again.

- The Toad Hall Team

October 2021

Little Kershay was an ideal property for us; quiet, peaceful and with beautiful views of an orchard and fields. Although next door to and part of the farm, it was detached, self-contained and surprisingly spacious due to the high ceilings, but cosy and well appointed. We know the area from previously but discovered Ferne Animal Sanctuary near Chard (inspiring), visited Mapperton House gardens (impressive), and spent half a day at Abbotsbury Swannery (amazing) on our way home to Salisbury. Also worth mentioning and within easy reach is Felicity's Farm Shop at Morecombelake, next to Langdon Wood walk which adjoins Golden Cap with sweeping views from Lyme Bay to Portland Bill on a clear day. The visitor's centre at Charmouth was interesting and informative, and we ventured down to Eype's Mouth to sit on the beach. Bridport itself has much to offer with it's markets etc. An ideal mix for us as pensioners of rest and activity. We hope to return in the spring.

September 2021

Had an amazing stay Loved the property and the farm Great hosts who even drew a map for us to cross the fields to the local pub! Perfect base to explore beautiful Dorset! Will definitely be returning

September 2021

This was our second stay and loved just as much as the first. The cottage was everything we needed. Quiet location but close enough to beach and town etc. Very well equipped and great and secure garden for the dogs. Will definitely book for next year. Many Thanks. Kind Regards Tanya & Malcom Hugo & Frank

Thank you for your feedback. We will look forward to welcoming you back to Dorset in the future.

April 2021

October 2020

We really enjoyed our holiday

September 2020

Cottage was great and very clean. When we did need assistance the owners were really helpful. Had a great break away!

August 2020

A lovely week in the heatwave, owners very friendly and brought us a much needed fan. Perfect place for a relaxing holiday for 2 plus dog.

February 2020

We loved Little Kershay, despite being the wettest holiday ever (thank you storm Denis) it was the cosiest little bolt hole. Really warm, spotlessly clean, well appointed, the comfiest of beds and the perfect place to relax.

October 2019

Most enjoyable, thank you.

September 2019

Friendly owner neighbours provided basic but quality food offering which was much appreciated !

September 2019

We would definitely come back here. The property is pretty and very well laid out, secluded but not isolated and it was wonderful to wake up to nothing more than birdsong. The terrier- proof garden is a particular bonus. And the owners are lovely and made us very welcome. Would definitely recommend this to friends...

August 2019

Lovely stay

July 2019

The place is charming. Perfect for us and our dog. Great location. So many lovely places nearby to discover and explore. Very keen to return.

June 2019

Loved this comfortable rural cottage, interesting views of the farm and local hills, good hospitality and welcomed by beautiful display of vibrant sunflowers.

June 2019

Sue and Frank were very helpful with the odd problem we had, and had left a welcome pack which was thoughtful. Very secluded and quiet, but a bit of the beaten track for us. (Not that we like the bright lights). Very comfortable bed and plenty of hot water/heating--which we needed. The kitchen is very small, so one has to be organised! When opening the door to the large oven, there is nowhere to go to escape the blast of heat. Lovely private garden. As an aside, the bathroom door has partially frosted glass, so one can see through. Not a problem for us, but some people might find it so.

Thank you for the feedback, the owners have added entirely opaque glass to the bathroom door.

June 2019

Yes, we did enjoy our stay, but some of the furnishings were disappointing - no wardrobe and the sofa wasn't comfortable.

A new sofa has been purchased.

May 2019

Comfortable but a little bit out of the way

May 2019

We had a wonderful stay in this little cottage, we were lucky with the weather. It was quiet even though it was next to a working farm, although the access road was a bit bumpy due to the potholes. We would certainly come again in future and would recommend it to anyone wanting a quiet spot yet near enough to the coast. The sign on the road was not easily visible from the Broadwindsor direction, we had two goes at finding it! But the property itself was lovely.

April 2019

Loved the location and even though a little rural, not far if you want to be back in the rat race again! Great views, with sound & smells of a rural location ... Loved It!

April 2019

We loved the cottage and location. Very pleasant stay.

January 2019

It was a lovely mid winter break. Very welcoming and peaceful.

October 2018

The owners couldn't have made us more welcome we had a really nice welcome pack of bread butter cheese wine and milk in the fridge. The Cottage was warm and cosy and in a wonderful setting.

October 2018

Had a really nice stay. Quiet location. Good quality furnishings and really comfortable bed. Lovely little place. Only drawback is the very small kitchen.

October 2018

Just to say thank you to Sue for providing such a lovely retreat. It was perfect.

September 2018

We had a great holiday. The cottage was lovely as expected. Would definately go again.

September 2018

Loved the cottage and the location. So quiet and peaceful and the garden was great for the dogs. The owners had left wine, butter, milk and THE most amazing bread we have ever eaten! It was delicious and such a lovely touch (the owner baked it themselves) . Will definitely return. Everything was perfect! Five star *****

July 2018

April 2018

We did enjoy our stay felt totally chilled out! Thank you!

March 2018

We loved this property it was snug and warm beautifully equipped with lots of extra bits (I.e.kitchen roll and extra tea towels) it was a perfect location to watch the snow fall on one day then enjoy the sunshine in the garden on another. One of our favourite holiday cottages to date also perfect for our small dog.

September 2017

Myself and my husband had a relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable 11 night holiday in August 2017 at Little Kershay. The cottage is perfect for a tranquil getaway in the beautiful West Dorset countryside and Sue and Frank made us feel immensely welcome and were kind and helpful.

August 2017

Owners delightful, setting utterly beautiful, location excellent for exploring all over. Truly loved this little place. The icing on the cake was that the directions provided were so good, we even managed to find it in the pitch black when we arrived at 10pm!

July 2017

Cosy little cottage in a peaceful, rural location. Has a private garden overlooking the countryside. We were lucky enough to see two deers grazing early one morning. Great if you want to get away from it all.

July 2017

Loved our stay here, and we are looking forward to coming back. Sue and Frank made us so welcome, thankyou to you both. Fell in love with the cottage and also the grounds.
