Excellent food and a great welcome.

January 2024

The wheelwrights has a nice atmosphere and the service good. The food was ok but not brilliant. Real beers and local lager available and good for a relaxing drink.

November 2023

Went there after reading rave reviews, to say we were disappointed would be an understatement.

October 2023

Lovely village pub, staff very friendly, made us and our dog very welcome. We ate here several times during our weeks holiday. Excellent food but found the drinks rather pricy. Other than that, highly recommend.

September 2023

We walked to the Wheelwright from the tram stop. Had an excellent lunch. Nicer than pubs in Seaton.

September 2023

A great place to unwind a few minutes away from rose cottage the food is excellent and very reasonably priced, Nigel and his team were very welcoming also Heather and her partner a local couple made us very welcome, we’re definitely returning

September 2023

Lovely food great staff, friendly locals.

September 2023

Great pub with lovely staff, food prices are very reasonable , would highly recommend

August 2023

Very good, need to book

May 2023

Great food and very friendly staff

August 2022

Excellent and a real bonus to have it so close to the cottage. Has a real village and traditional feel, popular with the locals but not steeped in the past - a tempting menu and don’t overlook the Specials board.

July 2022

Probably one of the worst pub meals I’ve ever had. Tables dirty and sticky. Toilets disgusting. The salmon fillet was obviously cooked from frozen, the pasta sauce was bland. The gluten free burger came with no sides. The fish batter was mushy and raw. The chips were obviously frozen. Waited an excessive amount of time for cutlery when plates were sat on the table. Overpriced based on the standard of food and service. Would avoid if you can… but there’s nowhere else to eat nearby!

July 2022

Good place for food, nice to relax outside. Reasonable prices.

June 2022

Only used it for a drink but nice place

June 2022

A lovely pub, with welcoming and friendly staff, serving great food. We would definitely come back here again.

March 2022

Good food and were able to cope with a party of 10. However, they did struggle to provide an ice cream desert!

September 2021

Location was great to the Old Cider Press. Lovely old pub, food was very good and service very friendly and efficient. Lunch and evening menus have a good choice of burghers, other choices are good but a little limited and some we wanted had run out on both occasions we visited. Would have liked a wider menu away from burghers in the evening.

September 2021

Loved location to the Old Cider Press. Staff very friendly, service good. Food very good too although menu limited and choices other than burghers popular and ran out. Too many burgher options for evening meal menu, could more varied.

September 2021

Lovely, friendly pub, with excellent food.

August 2021

The staff were very friendly but it was obvious that they were understaffed like everywhere within the industry. The food was good to a point but we would suggest that sauces should be separate where possible.

July 2021

I complained about my starter twice and its still came out cold and the owner seemed to take an exception to this, I wasn't happy, although beer was very well kept.

July 2021

Lovely pub with very friendly staff almost opposite Rose Cottage where we were staying. My husband had a delicious chicken dish with a sauce that he said was the best meal he had the whole of our holiday. I had the gnocchi in a mushroom and cider sauce which was 10/10. Highly recommended.

June 2021

Had a few drinks outside and in sunny weather it was pleasant. Ate inside last night and very pleased with our food.

June 2021

Very friendly landlord. Blankets and table umbrellas provided as we had to be outside due to COVID rules

May 2021

We eat here twice the first night we had to wait over an hour to be be served due to technical details with their computor system. The food was good. We eat there a second time and the service was fine and the food good. However on neither evening were we asked for contact details for track and trace and staff weren't wearing visors or masks

August 2020

Attractive thatched pub where our family of 6 received a warm welcome from friendly staff who couldn't do enough to help us. The menu was typical pub food, but well presented and cooked to a high standard. The staff all worked hard to accommodate the new Covid guidelines and eating there felt safe.

August 2020

Very friendly and good food. A bit casual about the current Covid 19 requirements (no screens , no names and contact details taken.

July 2020

We came on holiday an the wheelwright was in walking distance from our cottage we were made to feel most welcome.dog friendly too,the food is exceptional in fact we ate there 3 nights!

October 2019

Enjoyed a lovely meal with friendly staff

October 2019

Good food and value and great service. Thank you.

October 2019

Good food service dog friendly

September 2019

We visited for drinks and food whilst staying in Colyford. Friendly staff. Food was a high standard and thoroughly enjoyable.

August 2019

Visited a couple of times during our stay in the village. Sunday lunch was very good, great beef and Yorkshire pudding - stuffing was sublime. Slight mishap on second visit that was corrected straight away, good customer service. Itemised bills would reduce the amount of queries at the bar but as these are new owners I’m sure that will come.

August 2019

This pub has closed down.

June 2019

Excellent food and great service. We had two evening meals here during our week and dog friendly in the bar.

September 2017

Pub grub? And then some! Staff were friendly, apologising for the wait due to the busy period (Sidmouth Festival week). The food was excellent, hot and flavoursome. If only this was the norm for pub food. Well worth the money.

August 2017

Very welcoming staff and the food is excellent. Would definitely recommend

June 2017

Lovely home made food and friendly staff and locals, definitely will re visit.

October 2023

Good atmosphere and food A great old fashioned pub The only drawback, lack of footpath approaching the pub if arriving by foot.

June 2022

I'd give this one a miss, very smelly old place in need of a refurbishment. Would not even consider eating here.

March 2022

Very nice pub good food friendly staff would recommend.

November 2021

They really struggled due to lack of staff

September 2021

We had looked on line before we booked but the menu on arrival was very reduced and not good for vegetarians. As the pub is near a river there are flying insect issues also. The staff person was very friendly but could have had some help.

July 2021

Note very attractive and extremely tired inside with a very limited menu based on fried foods, building was full of flies but the owner blamed this on the local river??

July 2021

We went for a meal here when we arrived but it was very disappointing has all the meals came out cold and there wasn’t any staff about to complain wouldn’t recommend it

October 2019

Good no-frills pub food. Friendly staff. Worth a visit if staying in the village.

August 2019

you need to go in to enjoy the warm welcome and excellent food, well worth a visit

July 2019

A fairly typical Pub menu, ok but not outstanding.

July 2018

Pub doesn't look like much and is in dire need of some TLC, however food was excellent and staff really friendly.

May 2018

Excellent food warm and friendly atmosphere helpful staff, we'd highly recommend a visit

Lovely pub in a pretty location in the village of Axmouth. With friendly staff, we were made to feel very welcome. Delicious food which we found very enjoyable, reasonably priced.

September 2023

A very comfortable and pleasant pub with good food

July 2022

Good food, good beer, nice location and dog friendly

June 2022

Very pleasant beer garden. Lovely location. Staff shortage made opening times erratic and the online opening times were not always correct. However, when they are open, this is a good village pub.

June 2022

It is not "less that a mile" from the Anchor Inn - the Ship Inn was 2 miles, quite right, and 100 yards Anchor. But lovely lunch, we'll again

May 2022

Great pub grub and lovely friendly staff

September 2021

So disappointed with our evening! The food was overpriced and poor quality. This is the only pub/restaurant we eat in all holiday that fell way short. We left feeling very disappointed and like we’d wasted an evening of our holiday :( When we mentioned it to the staff they shrugged it off with no apology and didn’t show any interest. The table next to us complained quite strongly about their food and service, so we were not the only ones. Such a shame, but I’d most definitely avoid and spend an evening elsewhere.

August 2021

Excellent food, and am enjoyable ambience. The staff were very attentive and the external tables where we had our meal were well spaced.

July 2021

Great food & Great Service

July 2021

Food was very reasonable with good attentive service and very good beers.

July 2021

We absolutely love this place. The staff are so friendly and welcome dogs large or small. The food is really good. On a wet day and with no booking they still came up trumps for us. Really good infection control management. Highly recommended and the next time we visit this area we will dine here again.

October 2020

Very good pub, for both the beer and food - visited x 4 during our week staying in Axmouth ( next door to the pub!)

June 2021

Good food and service.Parking a bit tight because it was busy.

June 2021

We had a very pleasant experience here, even with the constraints of coronavirus regulations that were so carefully applied by the proprietors. We sat on a warm summer evening in the pleasant garden. Staff (wearing visors) were friendly and attentive, and the food was good. Everything was regularly sanitised, and there was gel in a dispenser at the entrance. No contact details were taken, however, for the track and trace system.

October 2018

This is well worth a visit. The staff were kept incredibly busy (a very popular place), but were efficient and polite. The food was excellent, packed with deep flavours that lingered in the mouth. Certainly a repeatable experience of given the opportunity. A good selection of ales and dog friendly.

November 2021

Lovely pub, great food.

September 2021

I had two meals on consecutive evenings. The first was absolutely delicious, stuffed chicken with a lovely mushroom sauce. On the basis of that meal, on he second night I decided to treat myself with a fillet steak for £28. Utter disappointment, steak wasn't trimmed neatly, very tough, miserly amount of veg, with a little pot of peas - I'm sure they were tinned!

September 2021

Amazing pub! Highly recommend.

September 2021

Lovely pub. Friendly staff. Great food. Perhaps more vegan choice. Great for dogs.

September 2021

Lovely food and the garden area is beautiful

July 2021

Very easy walk from our house and good food.Staff shortage meant longer than average wait for food but not really an issue as it was a pleasant place to be.

June 2021

We had a lovely meal there on our final day of our recent holiday in Colyton (11th June). More veggie options would be good, and possibly more healthy options for the children's meals - everything with chips, but what we had tasted great and that's what matters. The staff were really friendly and also helpful in giving us approximate timings for the arrival of the food as we had a diabetic 4 year old with us who needs her insulin 10 minutes before eating.

June 2021

We ate at this pub three times during our stay in Colyton and was extremely impressed every time. The food was fantastic with fresh fish options available daily and the staff were all very helpful and accommodating. They kept a good selection of ales too if that is your choice of drink. I hope to visit this pub again in the near future!

June 2021

If I lived in Colyton I'd be in this warm and cosy pub all the time! The food is reasonably priced and excellent quality. Good selection of beers.

August 2017

A friendly environment with efficient staff. The food was overpriced and not noteworthy. We regret to say that ribeye was bland, lacking depth of flavour, as did the fish. Clean and presentable, but unfortunately not worth the money. We would be most reluctant to go there again.

Seaton Marshes Nature Reserve
(2 miles)

(11)

One of three local nature reserves including Colyford Common and Black Hole Marsh, the Seaton Marshes can be reached with a short walk from the Harbour Road car park, providing views of the estuary and its mud flats as well as the creeks and adjacent flood plain.  It’s an impressive sight at any time of the year with flocks of wigeon, teal, shelduck and curlew as well as other native and migratory species.  A beautiful location to really enjoy the peace, quiet and natural habitat, in the Summer Kingfishers are often seen fishing from a perch directly in front of the hide, and a bird table provides close-up views of birds that you wouldn’t find in your garden.  There’s even a pond dipping platform at Borrow Pit, it features built in benches from which to enjoy the beautiful views and special adjustments to allow larger groups to pond dip together.

Have been on the tram on previous visits, but only this year discovered that on certain days a birdwatching tram is organised - well worth booking.

March 2024

This is a “must” if in the Seaton area. Such an enjoyable ride on the tram and as we purchased the Explorer ticket for the day, we were able to ride Colyton to Seaton (many times!) Not able to explore the wetlands as we had our dog with us, but we still were able to enjoy the views. Each of the tram drivers were so friendly and informative giving history of the trams and local attractions on route.

September 2023

A must when visiting Seaton. Really enjoyed our tram ride. Recommend getting off at Colton and walking into the village.

September 2023

I didn't personally go but family in our group did and really enjoyed their trip. They had a lovely cream tea at the cafe in the station at Colyton.

August 2023

Fabulous day out!! Buy an explorer ticket as this enables you to get on and off at different locations throughout the day. Refreshments at Colyton Tram stop are delicious, can recommend the cream tea, omelettes and the Tram Drivers Breakfast. A truly memorable day out, the tram drivers make the day special too!!

June 2023

What a lovely attraction! Used this a few times during our stay to access the wetlands, explore local villages and do a lovely river walk from Colyton to Colyford. Goes through beautiful scenery. Friendly staff. Highly recommended.

June 2023

Short distance from the property. Visited the wildlife photographic exhibition which was very good. Travelled to Colyton and back on the tramway which made for a very interesting day. Had lunch at the tramway station in Colyton. Good facilities at each end of the journey. Very professional and interesting staff providing historical information.

May 2023

It's great that this tramway - running every 20 minutes - extends right to Colyton (and only about ½ mile from this bungalow), offering a different way of getting to the seafront at Seaton avoiding the roads, with the opportunity to stop off at Colyford and/or the bird hide(s) overlooking the estuary. The drivers were all very knowledgeable and willing to tell us all about the history of the line and its tram cars.

May 2023

Great fun as always

March 2023

Good fun riding up and down on the trams. Scenery changes each time, with differing tidal levels

March 2023

Lovely outing with the family.

August 2022

If you have kids, or are a kid at heart, then a ride on the tram is a must. It was like taking a step back in time with superb views across the wetlands / nature reserve.

July 2022

A great trip out. The driver/conductors make it fun. Its a lovely run out past the river estuary bird life sanctuary and you need to keep a look out for the more shy and interesting species. There was plenty of room on top and a great view. Have a plan as to what to do at the other end, most seemed to stay by the station but we walked into the town (they don't like you calling it a village?). There were a few eateries but not much else, but some interesting old buildings. Traveling on the trams is an experience and was good fun. It is not a commercialised franchise but a well fun family attraction, and we enjoyed the day on the trams.

June 2022

Well worth the trip but more expensive than quoted on here.

June 2022

A lovely trip on the Seaton Tram with spectacular views across the river and wonderful bird and wildlife watching. The staff were most helpful and it was a great fun for all ages.

April 2022

Always great fun, volunteers are excellent and informative.

March 2022

All the family enjoyed this and we would really recommend it. Lovely to be out in the fresh air seeing the countryside and wildlife on the nature reserves

October 2021

Well worth a visit, friendly staff, good value.

October 2021

Nice trip, had a lovely lunch at Colyton station.

September 2021

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip, social distancing was observed

July 2021

Interesting tour. Very slow to get a high volume of people through with a lot of waiting around that seemed very un necessary.

July 2021

lovely experience,we even did the return trip twice.

July 2021

Brilliant.A very tranquill experience of more peaceful times.

June 2021

We visited here last year, and have had the privilege to do so again this year. An excellent experience, with complete dedication and first class customer service by those who run in - made my 3 year old grandson's holiday!

June 2021

Enjoyable for all ages (and dogs!)

October 2020

Great day. The driver on our journey to Seaton made the day !

October 2020

We all loved the tram - ages 2 years to 80 years. Such a lovely attraction, really well run, efficiently managed and great covid measures in place.

October 2020

Lovely friendly staff and Good fun!! Nice for rainy day

August 2020

Absolutely brilliant! Thank you for such an engaging and well-organised trip.

August 2020

This was a very enjoyable experience and was very well managed with regard to ensuring masks were worn and with regard to social distancing ... well done to all the staff.

August 2020

We had a lovely relaxing trip to Colyton and back. Colyton is a pretty town with a small heritage centre, an impressive church, some nice pubs and a few small shops worth having a look round. Book the tram at least 24 hours in advance online and get £1 reduction per ticket.

August 2019

Brilliant! We had a lovely day out on the tramway, our children really enjoyed looking out for all the different trams and ticking them off.

September 2018

Lovely little tram still going strong after many years! We took our boys when they were little & this time we took our 5 year old grandson. Great fun & we all enjoyed it.

August 2018

Good fun for all ages takes you back to a bygone age. Colyton station was really good suited the attraction, not so Seaton station far to modern in design to suite the wonderful trams.

July 2018

Told by 10 year old grandson "you must do the tramway" and we did. Great fun helped by good weather. Saw plenty of birdlife on wetlands. We parked at Colyton [no fee] and did return journey. Getting upstairs not easy, but try if you can. Drivers most amusing.

June 2018

Very good value. It would be helpful if walking connections could be made easier to/from Colyford Common and Seaton Wetlands to provide additional flexibility for tram passengers to vary their route.

June 2018

As the Seaton end of the line was being revamped we had to get a shuttle bus to a further stop. The stop was not manned and a large group pushed to the front which meant some people who had been queuing for a while could not get on. Also meant at the tram end some people did not get on the next tram as they got their tickets first. The ride itself was enjoyable and the scenery lovely.

June 2018

Nice day out, unfortunately still building the new building in Seaton so only goes as far as the shed's at the moment (May 2018) and if you time it wrong (lunch) theres no coach to take you in to Seaton! Friendly staff and fun ride, Colyton station is nice.

May 2018

A brilliant attraction, great fun, and the most amusing drivers - an absolute must for the whole family!

Seaton Bay
(2 miles)

(11)

Seaton Bay is in a conservation area within the Lyme Bay region including a mile-long shingle beach sheltered between the chalk cliffs to the west and the red Haven Cliffs to the East.  Axmouth Harbour is at the eastern end of the beach at the foot of the Haven Cliffs and the mouth of the River Axe Estuary.  There are two bridges, and beyond that an expanse of mud flats that are now a nature reserve, rich in food for migratory birds.  It’s a beautiful location to explore with an abundance of attractions including tramways, the Pecorama Gardens, a model railway, and the Beer Quarry Caves amongst other delights.

Just wow I’m a wheelchair user (amputee) it was absolutely amazing that Seaton beach has an accessible area it made my holiday all the amazing…..a massive thank you to Seaton

September 2023

Lovely stretch of pebble beach. We especially enjoyed coffee and cake at The Hideaway cafe at the end of the promenade.

August 2023

Lovely stretch of beach to walk along the promenade. Seemed popular for fishing.

June 2023

Have been coming to Seaton for many years and never tire of the town

July 2022

It has a high shingle bank but this does give way to sand, There is plenty of space to sit and you can get away from the crowded areas. It was clean and the town is only a short walk away. Parking is pricey but we are happy to support a lovely British seaside town.

June 2022

Long esplanade with plenty of seats. Clean Beach of pebbles but very steep incline into sea and a deep gully between esplanade and waters edge.

September 2021

Lovely pebble beach, backed by a promenade and beach huts. There’s a cafe at the end that serves snacks, cakes and drinks. Dogs allowed at one end (signposted). Lovely clean water, but be careful as it slopes in VERY quickly and you are out of your depth (more of a worry for children/toddlers than adults).

August 2021

pleasant but very windy.... park but cant see thsea..shame

May 2021

Whilst location and scenery/ walks are lovely, Seaton town is disappointing.

September 2020

Been coming to Seaton for several years! Absolutely beautiful, tranquil at times and a delightful gem of a place!

August 2020

We especially liked the setting and the service at The Hideaway Café at the wet end of the front.

The Buzzard Cycle Route
(2 miles)

Cycling in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a wonderful way to get outside and explore the area.  With miles of National Cycle Network across it, it’s also a comparatively easy way for cyclists to explore safely and really get to see the remarkable landscape that the area has to offer.  With plenty of rural pubs, riverside taverns and tea shops along the routes to sit and enjoy, it’s a great day out for the while family.  The Buzzard Cycle Route in particular (otherwise known as Sustrans regional route number 52) is a firm favourite amongst cyclists in the area, and is an opportunity to explore glorious East Devon on a regional 80-mile circular route around Sidmouth, Seaton, Axminster, Honiton and Woodbury. Some of the route follows the National Cycle Network Route 2 along the south coast of Devon.

Seaton Beach
(2 miles)

(7)

Seaton Beach is a mile long shingle beach overlooking Lyme Bay in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of East Devon.  The gently sloping pebbles make this an ideal place to take a dip or try your hand at windsurfing, kayaking or stand up paddle boarding with equipment easily hired on site.

An esplanade links Seaton town at one end of the beach and the popular Seaton Beach Café at the other. The South West Coast Path runs alongside the beach and a walk to the nearby picturesque village of Beer is a real treat. Dogs are welcome all year.

Lovely walk along the seafront and excellent cafe at the end of it. Dog friendly and excellent food.

April 2024

In our view one of the most picturesque sea sides in Britain. Not too much commercialism. A good walk up Jacobs Ladder, the gardens are great for the horticulturalists. The beach is a mix of shingle and sand. There is plenty of beach to wander up and down, and you can get away from crowded areas which are more to the town.

June 2022

Nice seaside resort, lovely walk along seafront with the dog & very tasty lunch at the Coast cafe bar, very friendly staff & lovely food. We travelled to Seaton on the tram, very pleasant journey & we spent nice afternoon at Seaton.

October 2020

Stunning views, clear blue sea and an amazing beach side cafe!

August 2020

Very nice

July 2018

Lovely and clean,

July 2018

Nice place for a seaside stroll, we were a bit disappointed that bikes aren't allowed on the paths and that there are dog restrictions. Pebbly beach so no good for sand castles but we had a nice few hours and lunch and ice cream from one of the nearby cafes.

October 2017

Beer Beach
(3 miles)

(11)

A small pebble beach in East Devon, Beer Beach is in a picturesque fishing village that hugs the shoreline.  Parking is a little distance away from the beach itself, which is accessed via a sloping road and steps at the east end.  There’s one large car park that’s around five minutes away on foot, and another smaller one in the centre of the town.  As the beach is such an integral part of the town itself, there are cafes and shops close by, simply by dint of its location.  There are toilets above the beach, so it’s got all the makings of a charming day out for the family in the summer, or somewhere to stroll and have a cup of tea if it’s a bit cooler.  There aren’t any organized activities on the beach, so if you’re bringing the kids then keep that in mind.  Dogs are not allowed on the West part of the beach from 1st May to 30th September.

July 2021

A lovely place to spend the day. Good cafes right on the beach, plenty of other places to eat in town and great views.

June 2019

Idyllic

July 2018

Absolutely lovely so clean and tidy. Food and drink catered for very well three beach cafes. Fishing trips, hire of boats self drive if you wish, what more could you wish for.

July 2018

Lovely beach at any time but especially lively on festival day. We appreciated the walkways over the pebbles.

June 2018

Beer is a very pretty village!, and the beach is an absolute joy

September 2017

Visited one evening. A beautiful beach. You can walk to Seaton on the coast path, if you feel energetic and don't mind a lot of steps. Well worth it due to the stunning views.

Branscombe Beach
(4 miles)

(13)

Nestled into a valley that reaches down to the sea, Branscombe Beach is tucked away on the Jurassic Coast, and is linked to a timeless, magical village of the same name. Surrounded by woodland and farmland, the area is peppered with thatched houses, a working forge and a restored windmill. It’s a National Trust location, with a number of charming walks and trails to follow, one of which leads to the Old Bakery tearooms. The beach itself was a long pebble beach until the winter of 2022 when storms rearranged the pebbles and is now a long sandy beach. It has a large car park close by where there are toilets available, as well as a picnic area. The beach is a haven for walking, relaxing and adventurous rock-poolers. If you want to catch your supper it’s a wonderful place to fish for mackerel and pollock, although the Beach Shanty Cafe on Branscombe Beach provides excellent local food.

Lovely place for a dog walk along the beach. Such a pity that the sea is eroding the cliffs around here.

April 2024

Attractive beach, good energetic coast path walking.

October 2023

Beautiful Beach with stunning walks in both directions on coastal path. Sea shanty cafe modernised since our last visit. Lovely cream teas!

July 2023

The beach was within walking distance of where we were staying. Excellent for dogs and the sea shanty sells dog icecream

June 2023

Beach clean and has pebbles rather than a sandy beach. Fabulous food found at the Sea Shanty Cafe with sea view and stunning views of the Jurassic coast line.

August 2022

gorgeous beach - we canoed and swam a lot

September 2021

Lovely beach

September 2021

Clean pebble beach. Good facilities cafe shop and toilets. Nice and quiet when we went in july. Lovely walks nearby

July 2021

One of the few beaches we found that had some sand on it, although it also had lots of stones too of course, and dogs were welcome. The option to sit on a grass area next to the beach was a bonus too. I had a swim in the sea whilst there which was lovely.

June 2021

Lovely area but the only place you could get a coffee etc was the Sea Shanty and it was closed half term week!!!!! As the Sea Shanty and the Old Bakery were closed all week for me it let Branscombe down.

February 2020

We loved walking to beach fro Branscombe. If you follow the signs and walk on the road to the beach its quite hilly so take the footpath from behind the cottages opposite the Masons Arms, its a nice flat walk to the beach, easy to follow.

January 2020

Superb beach and surroundings. Tricky drive to get there but well worth it.

June 2018

A pretty place down narrow lanes - the village is a must for keen photographers too - loved it!

September 2017

Monmouth Beach, Lyme Regis
(6 miles)

(7)

Named after the Duke of Monmouth who landed here in 1685 in an attempt to take the crown from King James II, Monmouth Beach is a large pebble and sand beach that stretches over a kilometer southwest from the Cobb wall.  There are beach huts, a bowling green, the Lyme Regis Power Boat Club and paid car parks close by.  Meanwhile, for those wishing to have their own exploratory adventures, you can find a layer of limestone called the ammonite graveyard at Monmouth Beach, containing a large number of (you guessed it) ammonites.  There are numerous walks close by and dogs are allowed on the beach all year round.  There is lifeguard cover in the summer, and all the town’s cafés, restaurants and amenities are within easy reach.

A very lovely beach if you like stones! But great when the tide is right out and you can fossil hunting.

October 2023

My dog Luna and I really enjoy walking and playing ball along the beach keeping eyes down to see if we can find a fossil!!! very clean and looked after Love it!!!

June 2022

Stunning, quiet and picture perfect ideal place to relax and paint ?

November 2021

Stayed here in The Little Sea House right on the beach. Amazing sunrises. Beautiful and peaceful but tricky to walk on in places.

October 2021

We had a lovely holiday staying in the little sea house. Perfect location on the beach. Was very warm & cosy inside. Was generally clean on arrival but think it could do a intensive deep clean occasionally to clean racks /hard to reach places ( plug holes) but this did not effect our stay ( I’m just bit OCD with cleaning) I would recommend this to anyone wanting a relaxing tranquil break. Also the out hours staff from toadhall cottages were very helpful. Would book again

Just beautiful

September 2020

Great for fossil hunting and dog friendly!

Cobb Gate Beach, Lyme Regis
(6 miles)

(8)

This pretty harbour town dates back to the 14th century, and is sheltered by a curving harbour wall, The Cobb, as its known contains a small sandy beach made famous in the opening shot of the film The French Lieutenant’s Woman.  You reach the beach between the RNLI station and the slipway, and there is lifeguard cover in the summer months.  Activities nearby include fishing, sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, surfing and water skiing, while facilities close to the beach include cafes and restaurants and toilets.  There are lots of walks in the area including guided tours of the famous fossil bearing cliffs.  There is paid parking nearby, Axminster train station is five minutes away as the crow flies and buses are available to the town centre.  Dogs are allowed on the beach from 1st November to 30th March as long as they’re on the lead, but they are not permitted in the summer months.

November 2021

Perfect sandy beach for everyone. Loved the Marine Parade with food and drink and ice creams.

October 2021

excellent, safe beach

September 2021

Always raked and cleaned. Pretty safe, excellent lifeguards. Restaurants and cafes need to be open later. Toilets very clean but not enough of them so long queues. Watch out for seagulls stealing food from your hands!

August 2021

Lovely harbour and great places to grab a bite to eat. But it is extremely busy. Every inch of the small patch of sand by the cobb was taken up but beach shelters, feet deck chairs etc. If your kids are not fussed about sand avoid the area if you want quite and relaxing. The other side of the cobb is quite and so are the toilets (which are clean)

August 2021

We walked here from Seaton along the muddy coastal path and Lyme Regis is lovely . We took a boat out from the cob .

July 2021

The cob was lovely to walk on and all you needed was near by

September 2020

Lovely to see this in sunshine for the first time in several visits. Worth going early to see it uncrowded.

September 2023

We truly enjoyed our stay. The cottage was very clean and extremely comfortable and very well equipped. It was obvious that much care and love had been poured into the restoration and refurbishment of this property. The fixtures and fittings were very tasteful and of excellent quality. The view from the master bedroom was worth waking up for and the courtyard garden, private, with lovely clean seating area, we also loved the herbs. Thank you again.

April 2023

A lovely spacious house in a lovely village

November 2022

The cottage was so perfect we could not think of anything that would improve it.

October 2022

We had a fantastic week at the Old Cider Press - it perfectly suited our needs with two young boys and a dog to look after. The living area was ideal and there was plenty of room for everyone to have their own space. The hosts were so accommodating and friendly - and were able to recommend things to do nearby, which was greatly appreciated. Would highly recommend !

September 2022

Absolutely fabulous. A holiday to remember. Wonderful accommodation.

September 2022

We thoroughly enjoyed are stay at the Cider Press cottage and would book again without hesitation. The cottage was spotlessly clean and superbly presented throughout. The owners were friendly and helpful. Nothing negative to say. Top marks on all counts. Thank you.

September 2022

Great house and very friendly landlord Very clean and well maintained

August 2022

Really enjoyed our stay with our guests from Dubai who joined us to relax from a very busy 3 weeks travelling and a family wedding. They were able to really chill down whilst enjoying the best of Devon hospitality. As a family we know the area very well and took great pleasure in revisiting old haunts. Enclosed patio was a bonus.

July 2022

Lovely cottage very well equipped very clean lovely owners

June 2022

The Old Cider Press is an exceptional Cottage. It is light, bright, spacious and welcoming. It is well maintained and very well equipped, we found everything we needed. The welcome gift basket was also a lovely touch. Bill and Joanna were on hand if we needed anything but also discrete enough to leave us to enjoy the space without intrusion. As it happens, my husband was taken ill into hospital for 3 days of the 7 and they could not have been more supportive as the week progressed. The cottage itself is really well located, with the local amenities being really good (2 pubs within walking distance, a café, shop and butchers on hand too). Its really handy for local coastal walks and the overall experience (despite the disruption of the hospitalisation) was really positive. I would highly recommend this cottage.

June 2022

Lovely, spotlessly clean and very comfortable property In an excellent location. Handy to have the very well stocked shop 2 mins walk away. Very good pub opposite. Owners live next door and are really welcoming and helpful but not obtrusive.

June 2022

A beautiful homely cottage which is well presented, clean and well equipped with quality furnishing. Fantastic pub over the road and close drive to some stunning locations. Will definitely visit again. Loved our stay there.

Yes it was lovely. We went to the Wheelwright in twice for food and a couple of times for drinks. Really great atmosphere and very friendly

October 2021

fantastic situation many places nearby to visit every where dogs excepted we had a fantastic time with our dog

October 2021

Wonderful holiday with excellent hosts

September 2021

This property was one of the best we have stayed in and our mixed age group enjoyed it very much. Loved the open plan ground floor. High end quality of furnishings, equipment and comfort especially for a property that allows dogs. Spotlessly clean and very roomy and comfortable for 6 guests.

August 2021

This property is absolutely fantastic! It has been furnished and maintained to a very high standard, with everything you could possibly want or need! Lots of little extras to make your stay a complete treat and the comfiest beds ever! The hosts live next door, and whilst never intrusive, are exceptionally friendly and helpful. The pub across the road, The wheelwright, offers excellent meals and is very welcoming. Seaton is a 5 minute drive and we enjoyed the pebble beach (dogs allowed at one end). There’s a good fish and chip shop there and a large Tesco for all your needs. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this cottage to our own family and friends… I’m confident they’d love it too!

August 2021

10* star rating if it was possible

July 2021

The Old Cider Press was just perfect in every way. The accommodation was first class, beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean, fantastic location and wonderful hosts. There are so many places to visit all within a short drive Seaton, Beer, Lyme Regis, Sidmouth, Charmouth and don’t forget the Tram ride and the donkey sanctuary. In Colyford there is a pub 2 mins walk from The Old Cider Press where we had an enjoyable meal, also there is a brilliant bike cafe which is a great place to start your day and get any bits and bobs for your bike. Highly recommend a stay here.

July 2021

This was the best cottage we have ever stayed in and we stay in a lot. Great location, clean as a new pin. Bill and Joanna were excellent owners, they met us when we arrived and when we left, they live next door but we’re never intrusive. The cottage was spotless we couldn’t fault anything. Well equipped kitchen love the addition of glass jars filled with dishwasher tablets, coffee and tea sachets etc, which we forgot, just lovely little touches that makes it a home. We will definitely book this cottage again.

June 2021

Really enjoyed our stay and cottage was, according to our family, every bit as good as our home and the best they’ve stayed in with us. Beautifully furnished with everything one could wish for and super large living space. For us the only slight downside was the bed which was quite firm. We’re used to mattress toppers. As we always take our own pillows and very light duvet we could improvise by using the house duvet under our own bottom sheet, problem solved! Thank the owners for a wonderful stay. Although they were right next door one never felt awkward. The courtyard garden was a delight.

June 2021

We had a lovely stay even though things were not open due to pandemic missed the Donkey Sanctuary which was a great shame. The property was wonderful nice and spacious and spotlessly clean the owners lived next door and made us very welcome and were very friendly we had a fab time.

May 2021

The cottage was absolutely perfect and the owners were very welcoming. We had a fabulous stay and will definitely come again. Possibly one of the nicest cottages we have ever stayed in and we have been to many.

May 2021

All good thank you

April 2021

going again in October, that is our 4th visit, brilliant place

April 2021

We had a fabulous stay at Old Cider Press! The new owners Bill & Joanna were wonderful, met us on arrival and showed us around, we were also treated to a lovely welcome hamper. The house is great, so comfortable, nicely furnished and immaculately clean! The kids loved it. The area is fantastic. Seaton wetlands five minutes down the road was wonderful. Would love to come back again. The only downside was leaving.. Highly recommend.

November 2020

Great well equipped property with quality fixtures and fittings and very welcoming owners.

October 2020

our second visit and as great as the first plus going back again in april 2021 [covid 19 permitting]

October 2020

Amazing property, feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to stay.

September 2020

July We arrived to a warm welcome. Very friendly. Love the house, it has everything. My grandson, 2½ said “I love it Grandad, I want to live here for ever and ever with Mummy, Daddy, you and Grandma”. That said it all for the family. Debbie, James, Claire and Tony. Not forgetting Oliver!

September 2020

August 2020 We all thoroughly enjoyed our week at The Old Cider Press. Lovely cottage, we really loved the sunny patio and thought the house was beautifully finished. Great location for exploring the coastline, we had wonderful days out at Golden Cap, West Bay, Abbotsbury, Chesil beach, Lyme Regis, Beer, Sidmouth and Exeter. So much to see, we hope to be back! Especially liked the house being dog friendly and secure, our miniature schnauzer loved it too! Thanks. Claire, Tom, William, Lucie, Kathryn, Alan.

September 2020

2020 August We enjoyed very much our first break away from home since before lockdown. Loved the house and atmosphere. Beautiful weather for beaches, especially Branscombe. Courtyard is a lovely place to sit for alfresco meals. Well equipped kitchen and bathrooms. Enjoyed walks around wetlands nature reserve, just down the road. A walk to Holyford woods nearby, cool and shady on a sweltering day. Good meal at The Ship Inn Axmouth and the Wheelwright Inn over the road. Many thanks Geraldine, Simon, Nikki, Gaz, Jack and Erin.

August 2020

the beds although of a very high standard were rather hard

We are delighted you enjoyed your stay at The Old Cider Press. The property is equipped to an excellent standard throughout with high attention to detail and sometimes personal comfort in a bed can vary from home. Thank you for your comments and we will pass them onto the owner.

August 2020

Such a beautiful, clean, spacious and well appointed property, especially as it accepts dogs. We really couldn’t fault it. Choice of two pubs, a cafe, a village store all within walking distance. Excellent WiFi and tv service. Really comfortable beds and sofas. Owners were friendly and helpful. Deserves more than 5 stars!

As soon as we arrived we got a great, warm welcome and nothing was too much trouble from the owners who live next door. They had loads of great advice about walks, places to eat etc and were very happy to run through the operation of any of the equipment that was in the cottage. The facilities were excellent with a glorious kitchen, lovely double sided log burner and very comfy sofas facing a very good smart tv. All of the bedrooms were decorated to a very high standard with furnishings to match...lovely bathrooms. Could not fault a thing. Looking forward to going back.
