Millstream, situated in pretty gardens, is an attractive, detached two bedroom bungalow offering comfortable, high quality accommodation for those seeking a relaxing holiday within a short walk of the local village and amenities. Located on the outskirts of the pretty East Devon village of Colyton, with its tearooms, shops and traditional pubs, this property is ideally situated for enjoying all that this lovely part of the English countryside has to offer. The light and airy lounge/dining room features patio doors leading out onto a spacious south-facing terrace which overlooks a babbling former millstream. The main bedroom has a Super king size bed (single duvets can be requested) and there is a second smaller single bedroom.
The ancient village of Colyton was established in Saxon times. The picturesque Axe River and estuary is also very nearby amidst the unspoilt countryside. This Area is a haven for walkers and the famous South West Coast Path lies close by with spectacular views across Lyme Bay. The local villages are fortunate to have a good choice of public houses, offering a selection of locally sourced produce and local beers. The Axe Estuary Wetlands, a well-managed wildlife reserve is a very short drive away where a large number of birds congregate to feed on the mud flats and salt marshes and these can be viewed at close quarters from one of many hides strategically located along the reserve.
A short drive away are the popular coastal towns of Seaton, Beer, Charmouth, Lyme Regis and West Bay. The popular Seaton Tramway, running along the Axe estuary, stops nearby offering a relaxing way to discover the local area. The whole of the Jurassic Coast, now a World Heritage site, is within easy reach and the lovely West Dorset seaside town of Lyme Regis is only 15 minutes away by car with its sandy beach and seafront promenade. The town includes celebrity chef Mark Hix's superb Oyster and Fish Restaurant, along with many other restaurants, cafes, pubs and tearooms.

The Medieval market town of Colyton is situated just 3 miles from the stunning Jurassic Coast at Seaton. There is a seasonal tramway that links Colyton to Seaton, running alongside the beautiful River Axe wetlands, which is home to an abundance of wildlife, providing visitors with an enjoyable ride and easy access to the natural wonders of the World Heritage coastline.
Colyton’s winding lanes, historical buildings, and bustling market place boast a wide variety of independent shops, cafés, bars and restaurants, making the town a great location for shopping and eating out. Surrounded by an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Colyton is the perfect setting out point for walking, cycling and exploring picturesque East Devon and neighbouring Dorset by car too.
As a gateway to the Jurassic Coast, nearby Seaton is a great spot for water sports, fishing, and many other traditional seaside activities, including viewing the magnificent coastline from the cliffs on the ever-popular South West Coast Path.
Slightly further afield, but still within a short drive of Colyton, you’ll find the Cathedral City of Exeter, the Georgian resort of Sidmouth, the quaint fishing village of Beer, and the lively seaside town of Lyme Regis. This traditional seaside resort is a great spot to try your luck at fossil hunting, enjoy the beach, stroll along the famous Cobb, or treat yourself to a meal at one of the many bars, cafés and restaurants that line the seafront promenade.
A holiday cottage in Colyton provides an excellent base from which to enjoy the coastal and rural charms of East Devon and neighbouring Dorset.

A small, family and dog friendly pub in the centre of Colyton which dates back to 1506 and is one of the oldest coaching inns in town. Good pub grub is availabile for lunch and dinner along with traditional Sunday roasts. Also boasts an indoor skittles alley to keep the family entertained.

I had two meals on consecutive evenings. The first was absolutely delicious, stuffed chicken with a lovely mushroom sauce. On the basis of that meal, on he second night I decided to treat myself with a fillet steak for £28. Utter disappointment, steak wasn't trimmed neatly, very tough, miserly amount of veg, with a little pot of peas - I'm sure they were tinned!

We had a lovely meal there on our final day of our recent holiday in Colyton (11th June). More veggie options would be good, and possibly more healthy options for the children's meals - everything with chips, but what we had tasted great and that's what matters. The staff were really friendly and also helpful in giving us approximate timings for the arrival of the food as we had a diabetic 4 year old with us who needs her insulin 10 minutes before eating.

We ate at this pub three times during our stay in Colyton and was extremely impressed every time. The food was fantastic with fresh fish options available daily and the staff were all very helpful and accommodating. They kept a good selection of ales too if that is your choice of drink. I hope to visit this pub again in the near future!

Spotless tablecloths and traditional china and silverware. The menu offers very good food (the Roast Rhubarb Crumble and Clotted Cream is incredible). Soanes Cycles

Established in 1902, Soanes Cycles is one of the oldest cycle shops in the whole of Britain, with over 100 years’ experience. In Colyton, East Devon approximately five miles from Axminster and seven miles from Sidmouth, they have hundreds of cycles on display to suit all ages, abilities and pockets. Catering to all types of cycling including children’s cycles and mountain bikes, their hire service is for those aged seven and up, and pries start at £12 per day with helmets and locks available on request.

Shute Barton

Only open to the public four times a year, Shute Barton is a magnificent medieval house and National Trust property with royal ancestry. You can discover the great kitchen containing what is believed to be the largest fireplace in England and take a look at the attic room with its medieval roof structure. The house itself has no facilities or refreshments, but tea, cake and toilets are located at the nearby church during open weekends. It’s a charming place to visit for a wander around, daydreaming about its past. As we say, entry is a bit of a golden ticket as it’s only open on rare occasions, so for more information keep an eye on the website.
Seaton Marshes Nature Reserve

One of three local nature reserves including Colyford Common and Black Hole Marsh, the Seaton Marshes can be reached with a short walk from the Harbour Road car park, providing views of the estuary and its mud flats as well as the creeks and adjacent flood plain. It’s an impressive sight at any time of the year with flocks of wigeon, teal, shelduck and curlew as well as other native and migratory species. A beautiful location to really enjoy the peace, quiet and natural habitat, in the Summer Kingfishers are often seen fishing from a perch directly in front of the hide, and a bird table provides close-up views of birds that you wouldn’t find in your garden. There’s even a pond dipping platform at Borrow Pit, it features built in benches from which to enjoy the beautiful views and special adjustments to allow larger groups to pond dip together.
If you like birdwatching you will enjoy this venue. The hides are well positioned to make the most of the estuary.

Absolutely great place to visit. Beautiful walls around the nature reserve and some amazing hides to sit in. We were very lucky to see the Kestrel in her nest with the eggs! Lovely information hut over drinks and snacks with very knowledgable volunteers who shared so much information about the site and birds that could be seen.

Seaton Tramway

In three miles of unspoiled countryside in the Axe Valley, Seaton Tramway operates narrow gauge heritage trams between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton. Travelling alongside the River Axe estuary through two nature reserves, it gives you an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life, the tram is a delightful way to get to know the area with prices starting at £10 for adults and £7.50 for children.Dogs are also welcome on the trams!
Have been on the tram on previous visits, but only this year discovered that on certain days a birdwatching tram is organised - well worth booking.

This is a “must” if in the Seaton area. Such an enjoyable ride on the tram and as we purchased the Explorer ticket for the day, we were able to ride Colyton to Seaton (many times!) Not able to explore the wetlands as we had our dog with us, but we still were able to enjoy the views. Each of the tram drivers were so friendly and informative giving history of the trams and local attractions on route.

Fabulous day out!! Buy an explorer ticket as this enables you to get on and off at different locations throughout the day. Refreshments at Colyton Tram stop are delicious, can recommend the cream tea, omelettes and the Tram Drivers Breakfast. A truly memorable day out, the tram drivers make the day special too!!

It's great that this tramway - running every 20 minutes - extends right to Colyton (and only about ½ mile from this bungalow), offering a different way of getting to the seafront at Seaton avoiding the roads, with the opportunity to stop off at Colyford and/or the bird hide(s) overlooking the estuary. The drivers were all very knowledgeable and willing to tell us all about the history of the line and its tram cars.

A great trip out. The driver/conductors make it fun. Its a lovely run out past the river estuary bird life sanctuary and you need to keep a look out for the more shy and interesting species. There was plenty of room on top and a great view. Have a plan as to what to do at the other end, most seemed to stay by the station but we walked into the town (they don't like you calling it a village?). There were a few eateries but not much else, but some interesting old buildings. Traveling on the trams is an experience and was good fun. It is not a commercialised franchise but a well fun family attraction, and we enjoyed the day on the trams.

We had a lovely relaxing trip to Colyton and back. Colyton is a pretty town with a small heritage centre, an impressive church, some nice pubs and a few small shops worth having a look round. Book the tram at least 24 hours in advance online and get £1 reduction per ticket.

Told by 10 year old grandson "you must do the tramway" and we did. Great fun helped by good weather. Saw plenty of birdlife on wetlands. We parked at Colyton [no fee] and did return journey. Getting upstairs not easy, but try if you can. Drivers most amusing.

As the Seaton end of the line was being revamped we had to get a shuttle bus to a further stop. The stop was not manned and a large group pushed to the front which meant some people who had been queuing for a while could not get on. Also meant at the tram end some people did not get on the next tram as they got their tickets first. The ride itself was enjoyable and the scenery lovely.

Seaton Bay is in a conservation area within the Lyme Bay region including a mile-long shingle beach sheltered between the chalk cliffs to the west and the red Haven Cliffs to the East. Axmouth Harbour is at the eastern end of the beach at the foot of the Haven Cliffs and the mouth of the River Axe Estuary. There are two bridges, and beyond that an expanse of mud flats that are now a nature reserve, rich in food for migratory birds. It’s a beautiful location to explore with an abundance of attractions including tramways, the Pecorama Gardens, a model railway, and the Beer Quarry Caves amongst other delights.

Seaton Beach is a mile long shingle beach overlooking Lyme Bay in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of East Devon. The gently sloping pebbles make this an ideal place to take a dip or try your hand at windsurfing, kayaking or stand up paddle boarding with equipment easily hired on site.
An esplanade links Seaton town at one end of the beach and the popular Seaton Beach Café at the other. The South West Coast Path runs alongside the beach and a walk to the nearby picturesque village of Beer is a real treat. Dogs are welcome all year.

In our view one of the most picturesque sea sides in Britain. Not too much commercialism. A good walk up Jacobs Ladder, the gardens are great for the horticulturalists. The beach is a mix of shingle and sand. There is plenty of beach to wander up and down, and you can get away from crowded areas which are more to the town.

Nice place for a seaside stroll, we were a bit disappointed that bikes aren't allowed on the paths and that there are dog restrictions. Pebbly beach so no good for sand castles but we had a nice few hours and lunch and ice cream from one of the nearby cafes.

A small pebble beach in East Devon, Beer Beach is in a picturesque fishing village that hugs the shoreline. Parking is a little distance away from the beach itself, which is accessed via a sloping road and steps at the east end. There’s one large car park that’s around five minutes away on foot, and another smaller one in the centre of the town. As the beach is such an integral part of the town itself, there are cafes and shops close by, simply by dint of its location. There are toilets above the beach, so it’s got all the makings of a charming day out for the family in the summer, or somewhere to stroll and have a cup of tea if it’s a bit cooler. There aren’t any organized activities on the beach, so if you’re bringing the kids then keep that in mind. Dogs are not allowed on the West part of the beach from 1st May to 30th September.
We visited on a rainy day but this quaint little seaside village never changes! Enjoyed a coffee in the Dolphin Hotel, dog friendly

Branscombe Beach

Nestled into a valley that reaches down to the sea, Branscombe Beach is tucked away on the Jurassic Coast, and is linked to a timeless, magical village of the same name. Surrounded by woodland and farmland, the area is peppered with thatched houses, a working forge and a restored windmill. It’s a National Trust location, with a number of charming walks and trails to follow, one of which leads to the Old Bakery tearooms. The beach itself was a long pebble beach until the winter of 2022 when storms rearranged the pebbles and is now a long sandy beach. It has a large car park close by where there are toilets available, as well as a picnic area. The beach is a haven for walking, relaxing and adventurous rock-poolers. If you want to catch your supper it’s a wonderful place to fish for mackerel and pollock, although the Beach Shanty Cafe on Branscombe Beach provides excellent local food.
Lovely place for a dog walk along the beach. Such a pity that the sea is eroding the cliffs around here.

Lovely area but the only place you could get a coffee etc was the Sea Shanty and it was closed half term week!!!!! As the Sea Shanty and the Old Bakery were closed all week for me it let Branscombe down.

We loved walking to beach fro Branscombe. If you follow the signs and walk on the road to the beach its quite hilly so take the footpath from behind the cottages opposite the Masons Arms, its a nice flat walk to the beach, easy to follow.

Monmouth Beach, Lyme Regis

Named after the Duke of Monmouth who landed here in 1685 in an attempt to take the crown from King James II, Monmouth Beach is a large pebble and sand beach that stretches over a kilometer southwest from the Cobb wall. There are beach huts, a bowling green, the Lyme Regis Power Boat Club and paid car parks close by. Meanwhile, for those wishing to have their own exploratory adventures, you can find a layer of limestone called the ammonite graveyard at Monmouth Beach, containing a large number of (you guessed it) ammonites. There are numerous walks close by and dogs are allowed on the beach all year round. There is lifeguard cover in the summer, and all the town’s cafés, restaurants and amenities are within easy reach.
A very lovely beach if you like stones! But great when the tide is right out and you can fossil hunting.

We had a lovely holiday staying in the little sea house. Perfect location on the beach. Was very warm & cosy inside. Was generally clean on arrival but think it could do a intensive deep clean occasionally to clean racks /hard to reach places ( plug holes) but this did not effect our stay ( I’m just bit OCD with cleaning) I would recommend this to anyone wanting a relaxing tranquil break. Also the out hours staff from toadhall cottages were very helpful. Would book again

Cobb Gate Beach, Lyme Regis

This pretty harbour town dates back to the 14th century, and is sheltered by a curving harbour wall, The Cobb, as its known contains a small sandy beach made famous in the opening shot of the film The French Lieutenant’s Woman. You reach the beach between the RNLI station and the slipway, and there is lifeguard cover in the summer months. Activities nearby include fishing, sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, surfing and water skiing, while facilities close to the beach include cafes and restaurants and toilets. There are lots of walks in the area including guided tours of the famous fossil bearing cliffs. There is paid parking nearby, Axminster train station is five minutes away as the crow flies and buses are available to the town centre. Dogs are allowed on the beach from 1st November to 30th March as long as they’re on the lead, but they are not permitted in the summer months.
Love the stroll along the Cobb beach and area so clean plenty of places to eat and drink. The locals are so warm and welcoming, can’t beat Lyme regis

Always raked and cleaned. Pretty safe, excellent lifeguards. Restaurants and cafes need to be open later. Toilets very clean but not enough of them so long queues. Watch out for seagulls stealing food from your hands!

Lovely harbour and great places to grab a bite to eat. But it is extremely busy. Every inch of the small patch of sand by the cobb was taken up but beach shelters, feet deck chairs etc. If your kids are not fussed about sand avoid the area if you want quite and relaxing. The other side of the cobb is quite and so are the toilets (which are clean)

It was very clean and comfortable and had added extras such as a lovely welcoming letter and bottle of wine. The reed diffusers and tissue boxes were a lovely touch too. The outdoor space with beautiful views is a great place to relax. Millstream is a good base for discovering the town of Colyton - with its very friendly locals. We tried all of the pubs and eateries. The tapas bar was particularly good. A little further afield we walked to Seaton and Beer. Great seaside towns. The local buses run a good service. Also a short drive away and well worth visiting is River Cottage HQ, Lyme Regis and Sidmouth. I would highly recommend this property to others.

We were able to travel by bus to places eg Seaton, Sidmouth and Lyme Regis and so had little use for our car and were able to relax, enjoy the view and didn't have to look for parking when we got there! The Kingfisher pub is really good & friendly, it's a 5 minute walk away and serves good food. Merchant tea rooms serve lovely lunches and afternoon tea is worth the calories. Can vouch for the fish and chip shop too, although it should be noted they only take cash . Plenty of walking and not far from the coast. Will definitely be paying a return visit.

Had a wonderful stay. Millstream is a lovely place for a couple or small family with a garden and terrace to enjoy at any time of the day . Though the kitchen is small it has everything you need and being open to the living dining room made cooking a pleasure. The town itself has everything and even in these times of Covid 19 we were made to feel welcome in the Kingfisher pub and the locals we met. Colyton is ideally placed to travel short distances to a number of nice beaches and seaside towns in Devon and the Dorset border area. Communication with the owners was very good.

The owners provided a very clean and well equipped bungalow for our stay. The kitchen was well stocked with everything needed to cook for the two of us. Although the kitchen was described and small in the property details it was fine for our needs. The outlook from the property was overlooking the town which was only a short walk away. Fabulous bungalow with everything we needed. Absolutely spotless, light and airy. Lovely location close to town and the Tramway (25 minutes to Seaton). The Kingfisher pub is really good & friendly, it's a 5 minute walk away and serves good food. Merchant tea rooms serve lovely lunches and afternoon tea is worth the calories. Can vouch for the fish and chip shop too, although it should be noted they only take cash . Plenty of walking and not far from the coast. Will definitely be paying a return visit.

Had a wonderful stay. Millstream is a lovely place for a couple or small family with a garden and terrace to enjoy at any time of the day . Though the kitchen is small it has everything you need and being open to the living dining room made cooking a pleasure. The town itself has everything and even in these times of Covid 19 we were made to feel welcome in the Kingfisher pub and the locals we met. Colyton is ideally placed to travel short distances to a number of nice beaches and seaside towns in Devon and the Dorset border area. Communication with the owners was very good.

We had a lovely meal there on our final day of our recent holiday in Colyton (11th June). More veggie options would be good, and possibly more healthy options for the children's meals - everything with chips, but what we had tasted great and that's what matters. The staff were really friendly and also helpful in giving us approximate timings for the arrival of the food as we had a diabetic 4 year old with us who needs her insulin 10 minutes before eating.

Only open to the public four times a year, Shute Barton is a magnificent medieval house and National Trust property with royal ancestry. You can discover the great kitchen containing what is believed to be the largest fireplace in England and take a look at the attic room with its medieval roof structure. The house itself has no facilities or refreshments, but tea, cake and toilets are located at the nearby church during open weekends. It’s a charming place to visit for a wander around, daydreaming about its past. As we say, entry is a bit of a golden ticket as it’s only open on rare occasions, so for more information keep an eye on the website.
Seaton Marshes Nature Reserve

One of three local nature reserves including Colyford Common and Black Hole Marsh, the Seaton Marshes can be reached with a short walk from the Harbour Road car park, providing views of the estuary and its mud flats as well as the creeks and adjacent flood plain. It’s an impressive sight at any time of the year with flocks of wigeon, teal, shelduck and curlew as well as other native and migratory species. A beautiful location to really enjoy the peace, quiet and natural habitat, in the Summer Kingfishers are often seen fishing from a perch directly in front of the hide, and a bird table provides close-up views of birds that you wouldn’t find in your garden. There’s even a pond dipping platform at Borrow Pit, it features built in benches from which to enjoy the beautiful views and special adjustments to allow larger groups to pond dip together.
If you like birdwatching you will enjoy this venue. The hides are well positioned to make the most of the estuary.

In three miles of unspoiled countryside in the Axe Valley, Seaton Tramway operates narrow gauge heritage trams between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton. Travelling alongside the River Axe estuary through two nature reserves, it gives you an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life, the tram is a delightful way to get to know the area with prices starting at £10 for adults and £7.50 for children.Dogs are also welcome on the trams!
Have been on the tram on previous visits, but only this year discovered that on certain days a birdwatching tram is organised - well worth booking.

This is a “must” if in the Seaton area. Such an enjoyable ride on the tram and as we purchased the Explorer ticket for the day, we were able to ride Colyton to Seaton (many times!) Not able to explore the wetlands as we had our dog with us, but we still were able to enjoy the views. Each of the tram drivers were so friendly and informative giving history of the trams and local attractions on route.

It's great that this tramway - running every 20 minutes - extends right to Colyton (and only about ½ mile from this bungalow), offering a different way of getting to the seafront at Seaton avoiding the roads, with the opportunity to stop off at Colyford and/or the bird hide(s) overlooking the estuary. The drivers were all very knowledgeable and willing to tell us all about the history of the line and its tram cars.

A great trip out. The driver/conductors make it fun. Its a lovely run out past the river estuary bird life sanctuary and you need to keep a look out for the more shy and interesting species. There was plenty of room on top and a great view. Have a plan as to what to do at the other end, most seemed to stay by the station but we walked into the town (they don't like you calling it a village?). There were a few eateries but not much else, but some interesting old buildings. Traveling on the trams is an experience and was good fun. It is not a commercialised franchise but a well fun family attraction, and we enjoyed the day on the trams.

We had a lovely relaxing trip to Colyton and back. Colyton is a pretty town with a small heritage centre, an impressive church, some nice pubs and a few small shops worth having a look round. Book the tram at least 24 hours in advance online and get £1 reduction per ticket.

Brilliant! We had a lovely day out on the tramway, our children really enjoyed looking out for all the different trams and ticking them off.

Good fun for all ages takes you back to a bygone age. Colyton station was really good suited the attraction, not so Seaton station far to modern in design to suite the wonderful trams.

Told by 10 year old grandson "you must do the tramway" and we did. Great fun helped by good weather. Saw plenty of birdlife on wetlands. We parked at Colyton [no fee] and did return journey. Getting upstairs not easy, but try if you can. Drivers most amusing.

Very good value. It would be helpful if walking connections could be made easier to/from Colyford Common and Seaton Wetlands to provide additional flexibility for tram passengers to vary their route.

As the Seaton end of the line was being revamped we had to get a shuttle bus to a further stop. The stop was not manned and a large group pushed to the front which meant some people who had been queuing for a while could not get on. Also meant at the tram end some people did not get on the next tram as they got their tickets first. The ride itself was enjoyable and the scenery lovely.

Nice day out, unfortunately still building the new building in Seaton so only goes as far as the shed's at the moment (May 2018) and if you time it wrong (lunch) theres no coach to take you in to Seaton! Friendly staff and fun ride, Colyton station is nice.

Seaton Bay

Seaton Bay is in a conservation area within the Lyme Bay region including a mile-long shingle beach sheltered between the chalk cliffs to the west and the red Haven Cliffs to the East. Axmouth Harbour is at the eastern end of the beach at the foot of the Haven Cliffs and the mouth of the River Axe Estuary. There are two bridges, and beyond that an expanse of mud flats that are now a nature reserve, rich in food for migratory birds. It’s a beautiful location to explore with an abundance of attractions including tramways, the Pecorama Gardens, a model railway, and the Beer Quarry Caves amongst other delights.
Just wow I’m a wheelchair user (amputee) it was absolutely amazing that Seaton beach has an accessible area it made my holiday all the amazing…..a massive thank you to Seaton

It has a high shingle bank but this does give way to sand, There is plenty of space to sit and you can get away from the crowded areas. It was clean and the town is only a short walk away. Parking is pricey but we are happy to support a lovely British seaside town.

Long esplanade with plenty of seats. Clean Beach of pebbles but very steep incline into sea and a deep gully between esplanade and waters edge.

Lovely pebble beach, backed by a promenade and beach huts. There’s a cafe at the end that serves snacks, cakes and drinks. Dogs allowed at one end (signposted). Lovely clean water, but be careful as it slopes in VERY quickly and you are out of your depth (more of a worry for children/toddlers than adults).

Seaton Beach is a mile long shingle beach overlooking Lyme Bay in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of East Devon. The gently sloping pebbles make this an ideal place to take a dip or try your hand at windsurfing, kayaking or stand up paddle boarding with equipment easily hired on site.
An esplanade links Seaton town at one end of the beach and the popular Seaton Beach Café at the other. The South West Coast Path runs alongside the beach and a walk to the nearby picturesque village of Beer is a real treat. Dogs are welcome all year.
Lovely walk along the seafront and excellent cafe at the end of it. Dog friendly and excellent food.

In our view one of the most picturesque sea sides in Britain. Not too much commercialism. A good walk up Jacobs Ladder, the gardens are great for the horticulturalists. The beach is a mix of shingle and sand. There is plenty of beach to wander up and down, and you can get away from crowded areas which are more to the town.

Nice seaside resort, lovely walk along seafront with the dog & very tasty lunch at the Coast cafe bar, very friendly staff & lovely food. We travelled to Seaton on the tram, very pleasant journey & we spent nice afternoon at Seaton.

Nice place for a seaside stroll, we were a bit disappointed that bikes aren't allowed on the paths and that there are dog restrictions. Pebbly beach so no good for sand castles but we had a nice few hours and lunch and ice cream from one of the nearby cafes.

A small pebble beach in East Devon, Beer Beach is in a picturesque fishing village that hugs the shoreline. Parking is a little distance away from the beach itself, which is accessed via a sloping road and steps at the east end. There’s one large car park that’s around five minutes away on foot, and another smaller one in the centre of the town. As the beach is such an integral part of the town itself, there are cafes and shops close by, simply by dint of its location. There are toilets above the beach, so it’s got all the makings of a charming day out for the family in the summer, or somewhere to stroll and have a cup of tea if it’s a bit cooler. There aren’t any organized activities on the beach, so if you’re bringing the kids then keep that in mind. Dogs are not allowed on the West part of the beach from 1st May to 30th September.
We visited on a rainy day but this quaint little seaside village never changes! Enjoyed a coffee in the Dolphin Hotel, dog friendly

Branscombe Beach

Nestled into a valley that reaches down to the sea, Branscombe Beach is tucked away on the Jurassic Coast, and is linked to a timeless, magical village of the same name. Surrounded by woodland and farmland, the area is peppered with thatched houses, a working forge and a restored windmill. It’s a National Trust location, with a number of charming walks and trails to follow, one of which leads to the Old Bakery tearooms. The beach itself was a long pebble beach until the winter of 2022 when storms rearranged the pebbles and is now a long sandy beach. It has a large car park close by where there are toilets available, as well as a picnic area. The beach is a haven for walking, relaxing and adventurous rock-poolers. If you want to catch your supper it’s a wonderful place to fish for mackerel and pollock, although the Beach Shanty Cafe on Branscombe Beach provides excellent local food.
Lovely place for a dog walk along the beach. Such a pity that the sea is eroding the cliffs around here.

One of the few beaches we found that had some sand on it, although it also had lots of stones too of course, and dogs were welcome. The option to sit on a grass area next to the beach was a bonus too. I had a swim in the sea whilst there which was lovely.

Lovely area but the only place you could get a coffee etc was the Sea Shanty and it was closed half term week!!!!! As the Sea Shanty and the Old Bakery were closed all week for me it let Branscombe down.

We loved walking to beach fro Branscombe. If you follow the signs and walk on the road to the beach its quite hilly so take the footpath from behind the cottages opposite the Masons Arms, its a nice flat walk to the beach, easy to follow.

Monmouth Beach, Lyme Regis

Named after the Duke of Monmouth who landed here in 1685 in an attempt to take the crown from King James II, Monmouth Beach is a large pebble and sand beach that stretches over a kilometer southwest from the Cobb wall. There are beach huts, a bowling green, the Lyme Regis Power Boat Club and paid car parks close by. Meanwhile, for those wishing to have their own exploratory adventures, you can find a layer of limestone called the ammonite graveyard at Monmouth Beach, containing a large number of (you guessed it) ammonites. There are numerous walks close by and dogs are allowed on the beach all year round. There is lifeguard cover in the summer, and all the town’s cafés, restaurants and amenities are within easy reach.
A very lovely beach if you like stones! But great when the tide is right out and you can fossil hunting.

We had a lovely holiday staying in the little sea house. Perfect location on the beach. Was very warm & cosy inside. Was generally clean on arrival but think it could do a intensive deep clean occasionally to clean racks /hard to reach places ( plug holes) but this did not effect our stay ( I’m just bit OCD with cleaning) I would recommend this to anyone wanting a relaxing tranquil break. Also the out hours staff from toadhall cottages were very helpful. Would book again

Cobb Gate Beach, Lyme Regis

This pretty harbour town dates back to the 14th century, and is sheltered by a curving harbour wall, The Cobb, as its known contains a small sandy beach made famous in the opening shot of the film The French Lieutenant’s Woman. You reach the beach between the RNLI station and the slipway, and there is lifeguard cover in the summer months. Activities nearby include fishing, sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, surfing and water skiing, while facilities close to the beach include cafes and restaurants and toilets. There are lots of walks in the area including guided tours of the famous fossil bearing cliffs. There is paid parking nearby, Axminster train station is five minutes away as the crow flies and buses are available to the town centre. Dogs are allowed on the beach from 1st November to 30th March as long as they’re on the lead, but they are not permitted in the summer months.
Love the stroll along the Cobb beach and area so clean plenty of places to eat and drink. The locals are so warm and welcoming, can’t beat Lyme regis

Always raked and cleaned. Pretty safe, excellent lifeguards. Restaurants and cafes need to be open later. Toilets very clean but not enough of them so long queues. Watch out for seagulls stealing food from your hands!

Lovely harbour and great places to grab a bite to eat. But it is extremely busy. Every inch of the small patch of sand by the cobb was taken up but beach shelters, feet deck chairs etc. If your kids are not fussed about sand avoid the area if you want quite and relaxing. The other side of the cobb is quite and so are the toilets (which are clean)
