West Bay is also the setting for the popular ITV drama Broadchurch, where you will recognise many landmarks from the show.

Bridport and West Bay are ideally positioned for exploring the stunning Jurassic coastline. Why not try your luck at fossil hunting to see if you can uncover an ancient relic or two, or take a stroll along the glorious South West Coast Path to blow away the cobwebs and take in the magnificent views.

Delicious fresh food with many local producers. Dog-friendly courtyard to the back was a real sun trap too on a sunny September day - you may have to queue for a table, but it only took a few minutes. Good number of vegetarian options (and some vegan) and a small deli at the front to stock up on yummy treats.

For anyone wanting gluten free, vegetarian or vegan food and cakes, this is an excellent place. Very friendly.

East Cliff Beach
(Less than a mile)

(2)

A fine shingle beach with sand at the water’s edge, East Cliff Beach is a beautiful place to spend the day with the family on summer holidays in Dorset.  There’s lifeguard cover from July to September in the summer holidays on East Beach itself, but that doesn’t really cover East Cliff Beach, so just be careful when and where you swim and stay away from the cliff base to avoid falling stones.  There’s a long stay car park behind East Beach and a smaller short stay car park just before entering the harbour area in front of the Bridport Arms Hotel.  Toilets are located at the main West Bay Road car park and baby changing facilities are provided as well.  Dogs are permitted on the beach all year round, but it is a clean zone that’s regularly patrolled by wardens imposing fines, so don’t forget to clean up after your pets!

We walked from Lyme Regis to Charmouth across this beach at low tide. MUST be low tide. It was a super walk, a bit challenging in places as we had climb over rocks. The dog absolutely loved it.

October 2018

I really enjoyed this side looking at interesting stone formations. The beach 'shelving' has to be looked out for if you are paddling and it is better to wait until very low tide so that you can see where bits rise and fall.

West Bay Beach, Bridport
(Less than a mile)

(4)

Under the golden glow of the majestic sandstone cliffs and the Golden Cap, the highest cliff on the south coast, West Bay Beach (made famous by the popular drama series Broadchurch) is in the south of the historic market town of Bridport.  At the western end of Chesil Beach, the area forms part of the Dorset Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site within Lyme Bay and is a wonderful location for family holidays.  Bridport Town is a short bus ride away or a very pleasant 20-minute walk.  The beach itself is shingle, sand and pebbles with steep shelving, a slipway and a harbour.  There’s an auxiliary coastguard and lifeguards at your service, toilets, disabled toilets and a beachside refreshment kiosk.  Nearby activities include kayaking, snorkeling, fishing, sailing, swimming surfing and jet skiing.  There are also car parks close by and while dogs are banned from May to September, they are allowed out of the summer season.

Lovely to stroll along the top of the dune which is compacted, easy to walk on and accessible from either the pier or the road beside the Visitor Centre. Wonderful views.

October 2023

Lovely walk, bit strenuous climbing up Golden Cap, buts it’s worth it ! However there is an easier route too.

September 2018

Lovely place to wonder around. Great relaxing beach to stroll along brilliant view of the cliffs. Easy parking. Fish and chips from the Seasider chippie went there twice in the week. really tasty.

August 2018

we loved West Bay very much did not eat at any of the restuarants there apart from the George Hotel (one night) as Gluten Free options were either poor choices or non existant.

Eype Beach
(2 miles)

(2)

A small pebble beach close to the historic market town of Bridport, Eype Beach is a steep shelved beach (Eype means ‘steep place’) with beautiful views of the West Dorset coast.  Dogs are permitted all year round and refreshments are available at Lower Eype.  The beach is part of one of the most beautiful little villages in the area, where buildings can be traced back to the late 18th century.  Consisting of Lower Eype and Higher Eype, it’s the lower part of the village that has access to the beach, which also boasts the magnificent Golden Cap, the highest cliff on the south coast at 191-metres above sea level.  The beach is favoured by swimmers and fishing fans as well as avid fossil hunters, and there is parking nearby for a few cars as well as toilets and a pub.

Narrow access. Park at the top for free and walk down to the church and carry on down via a path.

September 2023

Very narrow single track access road with limited passing places. Would not recommend purely due to access difficulties.

Hive Beach
(3 miles)

(3)

A National Trust beach in Burton Bradstock, Hive Beach is part of an estate that forms one of the main gateways to the Jurassic Coast and the South West Coast Path.  Around it are beautiful cliff top walks, and surrounded by the sandstone cliffs, Hive Beach perfect for visiting families.  Made of shingle, it forms part of the larger Chesil Beach and is on a World Heritage Site that has the largest shingle ridge in the world.  The nearby Burton Cliff is an example of extraordinary geology in the area, which appears to glow bright gold in the sunlight.  Perfect for picnics, the beach has a car park and toilets nearby, linked to the Hove Beach Café which specializes in serving fish.  From 1st June to the end of September there are restrictions for dogs on the beach, but they are welcome on at least part of it all year round.

Cogden Beach
(4 miles)

(2)

A National Trust beach, Cogden is a little known, secluded sand and shingle beach that comes complete with a members’ car park.  It has a wonderful sense of feeling remote but being surprisingly easy to access – the bus even stops there!  There aren’t any facilities, but it’s a beautiful setting, and in truth, the lack of goings on is part of its charm.  Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round and it’s a haven for walkers looking to explore the area with the National Trust’s two mile/one-hour circular walk passing through it from flower-filled farmland, past ground nesting birds and along this striking section of the Jurassic Coast, known for having the largest shingle ridge in the world.

August 2023

Our second stay at Harbour Lights and hopefully we will be back again next year. Perfect for our extended family. Such a great location near the beach. Thank you.

July 2023

Lovely house. Well furnished and equipped. Good location and the garden was fully enclosed for the kids and dog. Really useful to have electric charging point. We all enjoyed our stay. Thank you

June 2023

We all enjoyed our Dorset break as the weather could not have been better. We particularly liked Lyme Regis and did several walks along the coastal path, including climbing up Golden Cap. We ate at the Olive Tree in Bridport and Rise in West Bay, visited the Hive Beach cafe and had a good Indian meal delivered to the house by Subordan in Bridport.

June 2023

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the house is beautiful and had everything we needed to feel at home! We would definitely consider booking again!

May 2023

Yes we all did. It's the second year we have stayed there. Unfortunately we will have outgrown this house for future holidays as our small grandsons will be needng their own bedroom(s).

January 2023

We enjoyed the stay very much. We would like to rebook in the future. Very happy with the way Toad Hall dealt with the booking. Thank you.

November 2022

Such a lovely house set in the lovely Bridport. The house had ample parking on the drive for all our party. The patio & garden were beautifully laid out & the kitchen/dining area catered well for our large family group with plenty of seating room in the lounge too. Bedrooms were all a good size. House was within easy walking distance of West Bay & it’s beach & shops. Large supermarket within easy walking/driving distance too & lots of lovely beaches available within a short drive. Would definitely recommend this property.

September 2022

We had a wonderful family holiday and hope to return in the future. Thank you.

September 2022

the property was ideal for our large group of 10 people and the quality of the house was excellent. There was a short 15 minute walk to get to the West Bay beach but well worth it.

July 2022

We had a brilliant stay. The house was in an ideal situation and the house was amazing!

June 2022

We had a fabulous week, the location is brilliant to walk to West Bay with the beaches and access to the coastal path and also easy walk in to Bridport. House accommodation really good, excellent bedrooms and bathrooms, lots of cutlery and crockery (although saucepans lacking) super large fridge and very useful second sink. Patio and garden lovely. But property really let down by lack of outside furniture and uncomfortable eating furniture. Don’t want to under rate because of this as that would be unfair but could very easily be a 5 star property. Spoilt things for us as we were very lucky with the weather and it would have been super to be able to have relaxed comfortably in the garden after long walks. Check in and out ever so easy.

We are delighted to say the owners have provided faux leather cushioned chairs in the dining area for 2022

- The Toad Hall Team

June 2022

We loved our stay at Harbour Lights. Stunning sea views. Spacious, fully equipped modern house. Enormous fridge/freezer. Perfect for our extended family stay. We particularly appreciated: The attention to detail by the owners and Toad Hall Cottages. The enclosed garden and footpath to the sea were safe for the children Plenty of parking space Would book the house again and recommend to friends Thank you!

May 2022

We throughly enjoyed our stay at Harbour Lights. It was the perfect house for our family and we wouldn't hesitate booking it again and recommending it to friends

November 2021

We had a lovely holiday at Harbour lights. There was a bridleway adjacent to the property and it was an easy walk to West Bay and there were many footpaths nearby to explore. The property was modern, light, airy and spacious and the kitchen was exceptionally well equipped. Enough parking for three cars and an electric charging point.

October 2021

It was a great place to stay and a very good location. The coffee machine wasn’t there but a cafetière was provided instead. The owners were incredibly helpful as the pull out bed hadn’t been made up on arrival, so the cleaner was able to pop in straight away to provide the bedding. It was due to the fact that we had added the 10th person after the initial booking. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you.

September 2021

We had a lovely time in this beautiful house. The location is absolutely perfect, just a short stroll to restaurants and the harbour. Would love to come back.

August 2021

Perfect holiday cottage for the extended family. It felt very spacious and had a lovely safe garden for the children.

August 2021

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the property was very spacious. Plenty of outside space for the children to play and ample parking.

November 2020

A stunning property with an amazing view. We cannot wait to return

September 2020

We did enjoy our stay but Im not sure we would return. Back to Devon and Cornwall I think

September 2020

Beautiful home and garden, great location. Owners really friendly and we would stay again.

September 2020

Superb house in a lovely and convenient location. The property was spotlessly clean on arrival and ideal for a larger family gathering such as ours. Would not hesitate to come and stay there again.

August 2020

We had an amazing stay here. We were two families and had plenty of room in the house and gardens. The short walk down to West Bay was lovely and easy even for our youngest children. A lovely week away, highly recommended!

August 2020

Clean cupboards, floors and chairs had to hoover when we arrived

Thank you for the feedback, the property is very big and takes all day to clean under normal circumstances, the added pressure to now carry out a deep clean on such a big property for 10 guests in similar time is hugely demanding every week.

- The Toad Hall Team

September 2019

Really nice property, fantastic views and a short walk from the coast

August 2019

The property was really lovely, being superbly equipped, spacious and clean and as a large party suited us perfectly. Great views from the house to West Bay and an excellent location with the path nearby meaning you can be on the seafront in 20 mins. The only minor quibbles we had were that the induction hob was not easy to use and a bit temperemental (I could only get a maximum of 2 hobs to works at one time) and one of the toilet seats was loose. Otherwise all very positive.

July 2019

Very nice property in great location. Easy walkable access (~15-20 minutes) to both West Bay and Bridport. Fantastic views from all bedrooms. Lots of parking space, a great base for exploring the surrounding areas: Weymouth, Lyme Regis, etc. Had a very nice family holiday here.

June 2019

We had a wonderful stay at Harbour Lights in May. We had not been to this area before but found it to be in a really good location for accessibility to West bay and the surrounding area (mins to Lyme Regis, 35 mins to Weymouth and 15 mins to the lovely village of Abbotsbury). Although it’s not directly on the coast it is a rather nice 15 walk down a newly tarmac path, with a great playground on the way (perfect for kids of all ages) and you arrive in west bay. The highlight in west bay was the fresh fish shop with delicious seafood, especially the oysters! The house itself was faultless. A well equipped kitchen and modern fittings. 5 bedrooms and plenty of toilet/bathrooms. The house is double glazed so we barely noticed any road noise and the sea views from every room were gorgeous! The only issue we had was the induction hob blew up one evening when we were cooking. I rang the owner who organised an electrician to come first thing in the morning (8.30am) and a new hob was fitted and working within 2 hours!! Very impressed. My parents already want to book again for next year!

June 2019

Enjoyed our stay. Bit surprised at standard of furnishings. Need more large saucepans for 10 guests

We are delighted to say, the furnishings have been improved for 2022

- The Toad Hall Team

January 2019

A super holiday home which was well equipped and close to good local amenities. One (very) minor issue was a lack of bin bags in the kitchen.

September 2018

This house is beautiful, with a short walk down the footpath to West Bay, pubs, fish and chips and bakery. The house is so light and spacious it is a pleasure to spend time in. The location half way between Lyme Regis and Weymouth also enables easy visits to both. All in all one of our best holidays for our large family group.

July 2018

Yes we had a lovely stay and really enjoyed spending time in the area and the beautiful house just what we had hoped for.

June 2018

Fantastic house, very comfortable and well equipped. Wonderful view and location. Would definitely stay here again.

April 2018

Place was well located and well equipped. Didn’t like main large gates having to be left open especially as the road outside was very busy.

Thank you for the 4 star rating and feedback. The property is in a superb location, being an easy walk to town and West Bay. The big gates are normally left open to give guests the added convenience of driving in and out with ease, which we feel is more beneficial.

- The Toad Hall Team

October 2017
